I regularly tried to organ donate during my late teens and early 20s, sadly not all intended recipients were in the mood to receive! Bah! P.s. Don't tell the soon to be Mrs Melchett!
I spent time last Friday with the renal transplant coordinator at Norwich hospital. One of the subjects we mentioned was the 'donor card' situation. Healthy people of both sexes and all ages - as long as they're fit, I believe (and have for many years) should have to opt out of donorship. Not 'opt in', as we do in England. That's ****e. (P.S - Mods is there any chance of having a (semi)permanent "rant line" where people can rant/seek advice/get moral support, etc, if required, without derailing other threads? Just a thought) (Apologies all, dialysis and / or kidney transplant looming ever larger on my horizon. That's why I was surprised to see Rich's thread about donation.)
I'm registered as an organ donor and as a bone marrow donor with the Anthony Nolan Trust. Who do excellent work and ideally need men in their 20s/30s to sign as the process of joining cost them over £100 pounds to sign people up so they need younger men as the age cut off for donating is 60. I'd recommend looking in to that to anyone too.
Don't forget all registering is NOT enough your next of kin can still override. If you want to donate please please tell your family. I told the wife when the time comes tell them to use everything and then give the rest to medical research or whatever. What does anyone else need with the bits afterwards, they're only going to be incinerated. I was amazed that potentially one person can make a difference to 50 others. I also believe that there should be an opt out not opt in. Cromer, best wishes with your renal trouble. I know how hard it is being very ill although my health isn't that bad.
Very much with you on the opt out system Cromer. Frankly once you're dead it seems morally wrong to burn/bury something which can save peoples lives. Also mostly I think people are in support of it just never get round to joining the register. Sorry to here that your not doing too well Cromer.

I thought that organ donation was dealt with via your driving licence? I just had to renew it and there's a section on the form about it. Hope that means I am one rather than having to register for a separate donor card. There's some interesting ethical debate around the subject (which I wrote an essay on at Uni), but it's hard to come down on the side of an opt in system. I know it sounds crazy, but people are just lazy on this topic. Other countries have seen huge increases with an opt out system. If you really care that much, opt out. There won't be many who would bother.
Bang on the money my friend. Yes I think was early 90s whereby they changed the driving licence to include donor reg, but seeing as that info might never get updated again (the donor reg bit) it can't hurt to reg, you don't need a card in your wallet these days as it's all attached to your NHS number & file. Everyone must make sure their next of kin know and will act accordingly tho as they can still say no, after the point when you no longer have a voice
