Its better than the us who've been on fire, russia have gone to 2 shoot outs so you can take them to another one.

Have you seen the match ups? Finland will have to play Russia with 99,99% certainty. Anything but easy route.

Yeah I got what you meant reading your other post. USA based on their performances so far are the favourites for gold at the moment.

I know you hate the Russians Igor and I can't blame you. A lot of history between the two countries.

    Igor

Good luck in the medal round - I was fairly diappointed in the result at Loftus Rd and didn't move towards the telly until much later. We next have winner Switz/Latvia but not sure who Finland has next

Finland sort of my second choice as I used to live in the city with largest population of first and second generation (and now some thirds) Finnish anywhere in the world outside Finland and most of my friends were Finnish

Ask me to tell you about St Urho's Day nearer Mar 16 - I am given to believe that he has never been heard of in Finland

Yes never ever heard about St Urho???? What is it ? I know Urho Kekkonen was our longest serving president (1956-1982) but surely the day is not about him...;) Maple what was the name of that city with lot of finns where you lived ? Thunder Bay?

Yes after losing to you (congrats) we will face winner from the pair Russia/Norway. I believe Russia will go through from that pair, however they been performing quite nervously and there lies a chance for norway. It would be great to see Putins face after Norway beats them!!!!!

The city is in fact Thunder Bay and by far one of my favourite places among those that I have lived in. A tad on the cold side min the winter, but that's to be expected - it is, after all, Canada

St Urho, well, there was a time in northwestern Ontario, and the adjoining parts of Minnesota had then as well as now, a large community of Italians, Finns and Irish. These lads mainly worked in the bush during the week but would be in town on the weekends, meeting at their own clubs but mafter closing time there were major brawls in the cities (Thunder Bay prior to 1971 was two sepaprate cities - Port Arthur anf Fort William)

Representatives of the 3 commmunities got together and worked out an agreement between themselves which had the net result of the Irish opening their halls to Finns on Mar 17 and Finns opening their halls to the Irish and the Italians on Mar 16. This apparent recipe for disaster actually worked - there are now intermarriages - the friends I referred to above ere named McGowan but were Finn on their mother's sidey. The Irish had St Patrick so the local Finns invented St Urho. He is supposed to have driven all the grasshoppers out of Finland but maybe you could tell me if there are is any truth to the notion that there are no grasshoppers Finland. Anyway, Thunder Bay is today a lot more peaceful than it was at one time - and bith Mar 16 and 17 are noted in that city

I recognize that the gold medal game will likely feature the Russians and the Americans - maybe we can meet for the bronze - but I would be happy to get past the Americans in the semis and meet you again to settle this hockey thing for the gold. I will watch for your guys while I cheer on ours.

And if I am on the stick, you can expect to see a post from me to you on Mar 16

    Flyer

Although Mrs Maple may take issue withn this answer, I am a proper canuck. I assume you mean am I an expat and no, I'm not I was born in Windsor Ontario (sorry about these names) about 9 blocks from the US border at Detroit - but on the Canadian side.

Mrs Maple is an expat - she was born in a small community very close to Oxford, and a communiity which has since become a part of Oxford because of Oxford's urban sprawl. The last time we were in England, we went and found where she was born, a buiklding that now appears to house a girls school

My job is in Toronto but on weekends, I live in that same London Ontario - we've been here for pushing 27 years and though I did not go, I do recall the Flyers playing here during the preseason. I'm not sure if they have played any matches in Europe the was the NFL has but given the strong Eurpoean leagues in Russia, Finland, Sweden, Czech Republic and Norway my guess would be probably not

And Igor - my NHL support is for the Toronto Maple Leafs. What can I say - blue and white and last won the cup in 1967 - should sound familiar to a QPR supporter. And I made a point not to brawl with the Finnsh lads in Thunder Bay when I worked there - they were usually fairly large individuals, and I'm not

No the flyers have never played here, I got to see the ducks v kings and a certain Chris pronger but thats all.

The flyers haven't won since 76(?) So I know where you're coming from, the flyers and QPR are 0-7 in finals since I've been supporting them and people wonder why I'm negative!

So why QPR then, I assumed either you or your misses was from London.

There have been some NHL teams starting their seasons in finland or sweden few years back but im not sure that flyers would been among them. Maple, what are the odds? My favourite team in NHL has always been Toronto Maple Leafs. Yes, blue and white the same colours as in QPR-shirt and as in finnish flag!

Mind you my "first love" in sport is my hometown hockey team Porin Ässät and their colours+logo are in my avatar.
For some reasons flyer have a woollen hat with their logo on it (still havit bully boy?) and "by coincidence" i have a Flyers cap!!! Ässät won the finnish SM-league (Canada Cup) last season but this season has been a really bad and they cant even get to the play-offs. Our best goalscorer during this season has been Niklas Hagman. Does that name ring any bells? He played for Maple Leafs a couple of seasons ago.
