I have given it a go Corker, lol back in the early 80's i actually played ice hockey for a few seasons for the now defunct AVON ARROWS in Bristol and was a tad upset this week to see that the ice rink in bristol has just been demolished.
Working away means i dont get to see many games from the olympics but will no doubt be tuning in to see the "big red machine" versus the yanks so thanks for the heads up m8.

I was watching some earlier and was wondering if there were actually any rules regarding physical contact in this sport, other than it is compulsory to crash into your opponent at every opportunity?

Yes there are some rules rollercoaster. You suppose to keep your hands down when you tackle, you should not push the opposite player from the back and not hit him with your stick. There are few more rules but generally speakin its a fast, hard and exciting game (a real hard mens sport!) and i really recommend it for all of you. C'moooon youuu FINLAAAAAAAAANNNDDDD!

Cheers Igor. I saw part of Slovakia against Slovenia, some bloke got hit very hard, picked himself up, collapsed back down onto the ice, picked himself up again, collapsed again, picked himself up for a third time, shook his head a couple of times and got on with it; Mbia would have still been rolling around now. As you so rightly say, a real hard man's sport.

Some points if you are going to watch olympic icehockey. Biggest favourites for the gold are Canada, Russians and Sweden. USA could be ready for it too. Finland and Czechs are " black horses" for the title. The players to watch in this tournament are Sidney Crosby, Ryan Getzlaf (Canada), Alexander Ovetshkin, Jevgeni Malkin (Russia), Erik Karlsson, Daniel Sedin (Sweden), Ryan Kessler, Zach Parisse (USA) Zdeno Chara, Marian Hossa (Slovakia), Jaromir Jagr , Patrick Elias (Czechs) and our very owns Teemu Selanne (44 yrs), Alexander Barkov jr. ( 18 yrs) and Mikael Granlund (Finland)

I never played the game Turk, but got into it when I lived in Boston for 8 years. Was a regular at all the Boston Univ college games - real skill at the College level before they became the NHL brutes.

Would love to have played the game but you'd need to be born with skates on (ouch!) and there's not much of hat going on around Ireland........

I vaguely remember going to see a match between Streatham Redskins and Murrayfield Racers back in the 70s, Streatham were the British Champions at the time and the bloke I went with was a bit of a fanatic. It was a good match which Streatham won 7-5 if my memory is right but I moved over to Ireland shortly after and never followed my interest up. It's certainly an entertaining sport when played competitively at a high level as in the NHL...

Now can you see why I hate footballers diving? He probably had a broken ankle.

They don't stop for injuries unless the player is unconscious or is in a life threatening condition, the same should apply to football.

I watched the women's game today, Finland were done by a dive with 4 mins to go. Slovenia with just 7 rinks and 120 players won 3-0 (I assume it stayed like that because they left with five mins to go) against Slovakia.

Russia/USA/Canada are always good games although the real thing doesn't start until the knock out games.

No chance, it was just a group game. Its only the re writing of history by the american media that makes it seem so, let me guess, you've seen the film?

Slovakia's win today was a bigger shock.

Just checkin and noticed that Andreij Mezarov (Slovakia), Jakub Voracek (Czech) and Kimmo Timonen (Finland) are the only players from the Flyers playing in olympics. Do you still believe in Kimmo?

The "Miracle on Ice" is the name in American popular culture for a medal-round men's ice hockey game during the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid, New York, on Friday, February 22. The United States national team, made up of amateur and collegiate players and led by coach Herb Brooks, defeated the Soviet Union national team, which had won the gold medal in six of the seven previous Olympic games.

Team USA went on to win the gold medal by winning its last match over Finland. The Soviet Union took the silver medal by beating Sweden in its final game. In 1999, Sports Illustrated named the "Miracle on Ice" the Top Sports Moment of the 20th Century. As part of its 100th anniversary celebrations in 2008, the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) chose the "Miracle on Ice" as the century's number-one international ice hockey story.

Before that Olympic tournament that same USA team lost 10-3 to the Soviets in a warm up game played in Madison Square Garden. The even managed to draw 3-3 against poorly Norwegians in another warm up game.
The Soviets had the 5-6 best players in the world at that moment and got beat by students and amateurs. It wasn't mentioned anywhere in Soviet media in the days after, so big was the shame.

You really do know how to make a fool out of yourself Flyer. Slovakias win a bigger shock <laugh><laugh><laugh>

    No, its true.
Slovenia has just 7 rinks, them getting to the Olympics is a far better story, never mind winning a game.

Also I don't believe you haven't seen the film. Anyone we go says it's the best story would have.

I think he's on his last legs,he's been a great player but I think he will retire in the summer. Giroux being left out is a result of the hatred between him and Cindy. He deserves to be there too.
