A friend told me about this site and I thought some of you might appreciate it. It really does give a fascinating insight into old Norwich. http://www.georgeplunkett.co.uk/ Check out this marvelous colour picture of Carrow Road from 1935 please log in to view this image That River End didn't change too much between then and 1971 when my Dad took me to my first match. Blimey, I've trodden those concrete steps some times !
Yes, great site, that. While we're at it, there's some great archive film stuff about our region on here, too: http://www.eafa.org.uk/
Yeah I am aware of that site too gandy. There's film on there of an FA Cup tie from the sixties against Sheff Wed with the camera position behind the River End goal ! Frank Bough is commentating, remember him ?
Great picture it's amazing how much the whole area has developed. For some reason I always remember there being some industrial style buildings around by those allotments, I remember the view when queuing for eternity to purchase some playoff tickets.
When I first went to matches back in the 70s both the 'River End' and the old 'South Stand' were built on mounds of earth. Like Kickitoff, I can remember trudging up all those steps (and then we had to stand through the whole match - these young people today, they just don't understand!).
thanks very interesting site. one of the things i love about norwich is the wealth of old buildings. can you vist the great hospitall and go inside does anyone know?
I hope that's meant as a joke - it's a residential home / sheltered accommodation these days. Don't think they would like it if you just walked in! They do encourage organised tours though, it's a terrific place to view. Check out this website for anybody who's interested. http://www.thegreathospital.co.uk/index.shtml
I used to have some of my school exams in the Great Hospital The old N&N is the one that's flats now..
