Our family of 5 have decided to travel across the Irish sea and spend a week in England in June. We are bringing the car getting the ferry into Holyhead. Our plan is to stay in a nice town or village with olde english charm within driving distance of Legoland Windsor and from where we can get a train into London on a couple of days. We plan to rent a cottage or apartment and found a good website www.ownersdirect.co.uk. Suggestions appreciated.
Ashford (Surrey) or Staines. You can get on a train to London and Windsor & Eton Riverside from both stations.
Oxfordshire is beautiful with plenty of olde world market towns....I live near one. Within easy reach of Windsor and London by road or train.
Personally I like Runnymede, Bray, Virginia Water, Chertsey, Egham, Eton or even Windsor itself. Depends what you are looking for. All have got nice countryside around and not too far from Legoland, Thorpe Park etc and local towns.
Windsor itself is great - or if you're looking for a little town with loads of charm that's close to Windsor, with rail links to London, check out Marlow in Bucks.
Cottages 4 You is another website you could try, I've booked a number of places through them. Depending on what time you have available I'd suggest you consider going to Longleat and the Historic Dockyards in Portsmouth. These are two of the best days out in this country in my opinion. As Col says, there are some lovely villages in Oxfordshire, quite a number close to the Thames which is at its finest in that area. Henley-on-Thames is an obvious example, but I'm sure over priced, I'd suggest investigating around there.
The town of Wallingford is on the Thames and is a very historic place and about 50 minutes from Windsor by car.
Richmond on Thames, on of my favourite places - beautiful in its own right, great restaurants and bars, tube ride into town and trains to Windsor/Ascot going the other way. Lots of hotels, may be trickier to get a holiday home though. If you are flush the Petersham Hotel is one of my favourite places on earth - held my wedding reception there 20 years ago next October, still stay there when I come up to town for weekends and even wrangle work meetings there, handy enough for Heathrow.
