I am hoping for some useful advice from my fellow Rs. I am taking my family to New York later this year (summer) and am looking to combine it with another destination. We thought maybe Boston or Niagara. Has anyone been to Boston or any other suggestions?
I went to Boston a few years back and loved the place, very easy to get about, you can walk everywhere, great food and a good mix of old and new architecture. I would suggest that you visit Boston in the autumn (Fall) the colours are amazing, especially on a sunny day. So why not try Philly or DC both reachable from NY with both cities steeped in relatively long history for the USA!.
Niagara Falls is excellent but a long way to go for what it is. Would go somewhere else- a cheap flight to Washington maybe. Haven't been to Boston but have only heard good things.
Get down to Cape May for a few days from NY. Lovely beach area and amazing old seaside town. Some quality restaurants and quaint B&B's that are lovely. If heading to Boston try and take in Martha's Vineyard fir a couple of days too, well worth it.
Niagara is a **** hole town IMO, do it in a day then get the **** out. Lots to see & do in the North East, the whole of New England is great not just Boston.
Boston is my favourite place in USA...so much to do...cape Cod go too.The Hamptons are interesting. But Boston has so much to do. Was in Washigtton just before Christmas that was good too...take the Segway tour round all the monuments saves walking....great s h popping in the Malls and loads of museums.
Love Boston great city. Niagra is a dump and a waste of a long journey. A drive into Vermont and the white mountains stopping off is great if you have the time
Boston without a doubt mate, for the history, market and easy to get about then get the ferry over to Provincetown, Cape Cod, two hour trip. Provincetown is an interesting place to say the least, big gay population, popular with families as well, whale watching on the Stellweggen Bank is worth doing August/Sept. Had great holidays in that part of the world.
I have been to the falls before but it was the canadian side. I seem to recall Niagara on the lake being nice.
Mate, Boston is well worth a visit. Dont bother with Philly as its a dump. Never been to Niagra so cant comment, but on my "to do" list. If you carried on back the other way you could always try Australia & NZ...!! Be carefull of those Kiwis and thier sheep though...
I went to NY for my honeymoon. We spent a week there and then took a cruise from NY to Bermuda for the second week. Bermuda is arguably the best place on this earth. Btw, I've also done Toronto and Niagra. I don't recall Niagra as being a dump. We had a great time there.
As someone who gas lived in NY for over 39 tears I would spend 3 days in NY the rent a car a first stp wiuld be Baltimore. The Inner Harbour is fantastic. The Aquaeim is anazing, the zoo is great and the restaurants are as good as NY. The go to Washington. Its a fantastic-place with, sights, museums and food. If you have time Virginia and North Carolina are great. Baltimore is a 4 hor drive and Washington a further ! hour. This what I would do having lived here for so long. Boston, a 5 hour drive, would be a second trip. Washington or Boston is a motorwar trip for 95% of a drive and petrok is $3 .25/gal Niagra is a waterfall, thats it.
$4.00 a gallon where I live. 30 miles north of NYC. Boston is great since it is so easy to walk around. Loads to see and do. Washington is more sprawling and has it's own impressive feel. Cape May is quaint and doable in half a day and is quite close to Atlantic City if you fancy a flutter. Cape Ann, just north of Boston is fabulous for scenery, seaside, interesting towns and something for all the family. Cape Cod is always a beautiful and interesting area to visit, not just the small island of Martha's Vineyard.
I visited New York City for a few days with my wife in Sept 2002. Driving in from the airport (Newark?), I imagined some of the scenes from the intro to The Sopranos. We stayed in really fancy embassy accommodations in Manhattan (81st ave?) at friends of my wife who were consular officials there. On arrival the first thing we did was go for a long walk in Central Park which is quite an experience with all the little trails. We did the harbour boat tour, with lots of security, past Ellis Island but the Statue of Liberty was still closed. Visited the site of the Twin Towers of course, Grand Central Station, the Wall Street golden bull, saw a show, Mama Mia and did the museums and art galleries near Central Park. Ate pizza on the street corner across from the Empire State Building (my wife was hungry!), so never went up for the tour. Used the NY subway quite a bit and took a bus to Harlem, where the Apollo Theatre is, and while my wife shopped for a couple of hours and I seemed to be the only white guy on the street there - ate Krispy Creme donuts and someone on the street was selling old negro KKK lynching photos that was a bit weird. En route to Harlem the bus went past an absolutely huge cathedral. Went out to a few local pubs and drank Rollin' Rock beer. The rooftop water reservoirs catch your eye on the NY skyline, they look like rockets perched up there. Early morning when we left early I wasn't very good at attracting the attention of a Yellow Cab, but the doorman of our building had no problem! Great break for a few days away from 5 kids, aged 1 yr to 10 yrs back then. Having somewhere to stay really helped with expenses.
Yes 9s I went there ten years ago and Niagara on the Lake was lovely. I suspect the US side is not so nice judging by the comments here.
