Sometimes this country is crazy and its not an April fool Milly Dowler killer awarded payout after Wakefield Prison assault The serial killer who murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler has been awarded a £4,500 payout after being assaulted in Wakefield Prison. The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) said it is "hugely disappointed" by the judge's decision. Levi Bellfield was attacked by a fellow prisoner with a makeshift weapon in 2009 before he went on trial for the murder of 13-year-old Milly. He is believed to have suffered minor injuries but launched legal action claiming that prison staff should have protected him, the Daily Mirror reported. Lawyers on behalf of the MoJ fought against his case for three years but they were forced to admit full liability at Durham County Court on Wednesday, the newspaper added. A Ministry of Justice spokesman said: "We are hugely disappointed that Levi Bellfield was awarded £4,500 by a judge following an assault by a prisoner in 2009 at HMP Wakefield." Labour MP Ian Austin, a member of the Home Affairs Select Committee, told the Daily Mirror : "This is a complete and utter disgrace. Every right-thinking person will agree this is distasteful and wrong." Former nightclub bouncer Bellfield is serving a double whole-life term having been convicted of the murder of Walton-on-Thames schoolgirl Milly while already serving a whole-life term for the murders of Amelie Delagrange and Marsha McDonnell and the attempted murder of Kate Sheedy. Milly was snatched from the street on her way home in March 2002.
The law applies to all, we may not like it but it has to be that way even for filth like the person concerned.
**** him. With the things he did, he gave up his right to be treated as a human being. The c*** should of been put down at the earliest opportunity. Painfully. Gutted to know I might of exchanged pleasantries with him in the past without realising it.
It is your / our / societies ability to treat him fairly that makes you a human being. Don't give that up otherwise he drags you to his level.
Its the law, having said that. I'm hoping they are saving up some money for the next attack, it will be well earned. Let's face it, he's not exactly going to be enjoying the money is he?
I do know what you mean mate but, IMO, the desire for revenge and justice far outweighs any thought of treating scum like that fairly. There is no doubt whatsoever that he committed the crimes stated and charged, and I would gladly pull the trigger . If that means I'm somehow 'dragged to his level', then so be it, I'm sure I can live with it.
I know what you mean. It's easy to take the moral high ground when it's not my kid whose been abused and killed. Really tricky one.
Change the law. When prison killers are entitled to awards of compensation, let it be paid to a charity.
That sounds about right to me. Trouble is, it is just a case of wrongs on wrongs...what he originally did was wrong beyond belief, but it was also wrong that he was assualted, but then there is something wrong with him benefiting financially. A worthy cause receiving the £4,500 would be the first right act in all of it.
I have, unfortunately VERY close personal connections to a case not too dissimilar to that of Milly Dowler, and believe me, I would dispatch these oxygen thieves at the drop of a hat.
Bang on the money, Shefford. I personally think swiftly dangling people like this from the end of a rope is ultimately more humane than letting them rot in jail till the end of their days.
I would support this proposal if people like this character were put in stocks and we, the general public, were invited to queue up to make our donations to charity. Sadly, I fear the Exchequer would be bankrupt inside a month.
Maybe not, but Milly is not enjoying her life is she? And in my experience, nor will her relatives, close friends and the people whose lives she touched.
Why the **** should we as (mostly) law abiding citizens, pay to keep low lifes like this **** alive? Our taxes pay to let him live. I think I read somewhere that it costs in the region of £100k per year to keep criminals behind bars. Acceptable for those that have not committed murder, but that is a line that once crossed, should be met with the ultimate punishment. As I said earlier, I speak from bitter experience and I would off these c*nts for free.
You're right to be sceptical, because while Parliament could enact this, I'm sure it would fall foul of the European Court of Human Rights which is much more concerned with perpetrators' welfare and is pressing for the likes of Bellfield to have the vote and be given a determinate and not an indefinite sentence.
