Full programme for Hull Veterans' Weekend 2014 in East Park The full programme for Veterans Weekend 2014 has been announced. It will be held in East Park, Hull, this Saturday (July 26) and Sunday (July 27) between 10am and 5pm. Kevin Shoesmith reports. A triple whammy of world-famous display teams will make this year's Veterans' Weekend event is the best yet, says the organiser. Last year, 50,000 people packed into Hull's East Park to enjoy two days of activities and displays, all designed to honour British forces past and present. But Honorary Alderman Brian Petch believes, provided the weather is good, this one will eclipse all previous events. He said: "I don't think we could have a better line-up. "About ten years ago, when I started organising this event, we were lucky if we had 2,000 visitors. It's come on well." Expected highlights of the event, which takes place on Saturday and Sunday, include: ⢠A flypast by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, which comprises a Hurricane, Spitfire and Lancaster (3.15pm on Sunday). ⢠A flypast by the Red Arrows (3.53pm on Sunday). ⢠The Royal Signals Motorcycle Display Team (1pm on Saturday and 1.30pm on Sunday). Mr Petch revealed acts are now approaching him for a slot, not the other way around. He said: "When all this started I'd be calling people, all around the country, asking if they'd like to come to Hull. "Some people were turning their noses up, not wanting to come here. "Now, we have the likes of the Red Arrows actually ringing us up asking if we'd like a flypast. "Getting these three main displays is fantastic." Visitors can also expect First World War and Second World War reenactments, Cadet Force bands, jive dancers and fly-pasts, as well as 1940s-style displays. Mr Petch said: "We're having First World War battles on horseback. "A farrier will also be on hand to explain how horse shoes are made and fitted." Education is a big part of Veterans' Weekend, said Mr Petch. "We want to educate people, especially children, about conflict and the role of the Armed Forces," he said. "It's very important, especially with conflicts still taking place in Afghanistan and elsewhere, that people are made aware. "Archbishop Sentamu Acad- emy will be sending along their school choir to perform 1940s songs." Lord Mayor Cllr Mary Glew will be collected from the Guildhall at 9.30am on Saturday in a 1904 Stanley steam car and driven to East Park. "As far as I know there are only two of these cars left in the world," said Mr Petch. "One of them is in America and the other is in Leven, so we're very fortunate to have it taking part in this event." The event runs from 10am to 5pm on both days. http://www.hulldailymail.co.uk/prog.../story.html#XvTHgQeIW8IqjSBL.01#ixzz38NSopBrr
Red arrows & BBMF flypasts are because they are displaying just over the river at Cleethorpes, so I'm sorry those two certainly were not lining up asking to display & the Red Arrows certainly won't have asked if a flypast was wanted, that's not how they work, a simple form is submitted & if it is near a route between displays then where possible they try to accommodate (in this case they are displaying at Sunderland & then flying down to display at Cleethorpes so can hardly miss Hull)
Please note my edited post. I know how their system works having a son in law who works as groundcrew at Scampton Same applies to BBMF who are also displaying at Sunderland then Cleethorpes
I don't think it really matters how they came to be there, it's just good that they're going to be there.
Not really as I said they do not ask if a flypast is wanted, they receive requests & if on or near a transit route they try to accommodate. Sunderland & Cleethorpes are paying for displays, on the way between the two they will have received a flypast request & as it is so close to the transit route they will have agreed to fly over the park (they will probably do a couple of runs with smoke on). It's not really doing 2 jobs in one, it's simply agreeing to divert route slightly to fulfil a request they have received. The Red Arrows are very good & will do this where possible if requested for almost any event on a transit route, you can download the request form from their website. You will find no mention of these flyovers on the website, only their official displays
I agree but stories like they asked to fly over make me laugh. I also find it interesting that each year Cleethorpes & Sunderland manage to arrange 2 or 3 day free displays with dozens of aircraft, displays etc, yet Hull City Council arrange nothing similar. These things are huge draws to the area bringing in custom & income & are mostly funded through sponsorship. It may be worth them looking at this, if only for say Armed Forces Day, or this Veterans Weekend
flypasts???????????? three planes have come down or disapeared and you want planes flying over hull center???????? effin ell!!
Sure but they get regularly and lovingly serviced! NB: If you do too, you lucky bastard, if you don't, welcome to the club.
And on another note, funnily enough I just spotted this. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/ukn...r-Red-Arrows-to-use-blue-and-white-smoke.html Well done. Filthy jocks. They should be privileged the red arrows will agree to fly over there. I wonder how many natives will think they're under attack from aliens and start shooting their bows and arrows
