anyone had an e-mail to their Hotmail account from HMRC stating that they are eligible for a tax rebate? doesn't look 100% legit to me like.
Its a scam We've had loads at the bank, delete and forget mate Its called phishing phishing ˈfɪʃɪŋ/ noun the fraudulent practice of sending emails purporting to be from reputable companies in order to induce individuals to reveal personal information, such as passwords and credit card numbers, online.
There's so many kicking about at the moment. Thing to remember is companies don't email by default, If you wanted HMRC to contact you via Email, you'd have to instruct them to, otherwise you'd be contacted by regular mail. The Paypal scams on the other hands are proper dodgy, those fake Emails look proper real. Paypal themselves only contact you by Email and everyone has a paypal account so it's a big market to scam.
I have a friend in Nigeria who can help you with tax rebates, just send him £100 and ya bank sort code and account no and you will have ya last 20 years tax refunded
Never open HMRC or bank emails...some will even display certain bank names that look genuine in the title...and defo never ever download anything. The most pushy activity i've heard of more recently is from someone claiming to be the 'Microsoft Technical Centre' based and phoning from Manchester - tell them to do one and again defo don't download anything or allow them access to your devices.
The best advise from a close friend who works for the dark side of our government over the years is delete all emails from unknowns & wait for the knock on the door that will arrive from any legitimate ones!
You should immediately e-mail me all your bank details and sort codes so I can keep your money safe....
cheers all (even Tony & Joe lol), forwarded e-mail to the phishing dept and deleted. got a little excited there for a bit when I thought I was getting money back for once! oh well....
My wife filled one of these on about 3 Years ago luckily nothing bad has happened but told her not to he so stupid in future. I also got a call from Microsoft about my version of windows. "We believe you are running a pirated version of our operating system we need access to your PC to check" My reply " I known I have a pirated version, I installed the thing, if I had to pay for the piece of crap I would use Linux exclusively, but how the **** do you know I was using pirated windows" and slammed the phone down before they had a chance to reply.
I get loads of the "This is the windows helpdesk, we see that your computer is generating errors on the internet" type calls. I usually let them talk for quite a while (might as well increase their call costs) before asking them what the **** they're doing trying to scam me. They've always insisted that they are genuine, and never once just said "oh well, sorry to bother you, on to the next mug". What I'm not sure of is whether the people doing the calling actually know they're talking crap, or whether they're just working in a call centre and reading a script that they think is true.
That's a good point. Just look at the energy companies miss selling for one example. I always imagine it as some fat greasy bloke in a bedsit dong it all.
I have had loads of these calls they usually get you to check the event logs where inevitably there will be some errors logged. Then they try to get you to install software from a website to "correct the errors". If I have time I act as though I am an old codger and completely new to computers so they have to keep repeating their instructions i.e. "start button - where on the screen is that?" etc to be fair so far each one of them has been very patient obviously thinking there will be a payload at the end. My record so far is 25 minutes and when he tried to get me to log onto the website for the software I told him that I knew the software was designed to steal passwords bank details etc. You should have heard the swearing and the "why didn't I tell him earlier etc" the cheeky b*****d anyway I wished him a happy phone bill and but the phone down.
