ITâS boom time at Sunderlandâs Nissan plant. The factory today announced plans to launch an extra shift when it starts building another new model. The car giant revealed its workforce will start building an as-yet-unnamed new medium hatchback in 2014, in a move which will create more than 1,000 jobs at the plant and throughout its supply chain. Click here to see our video report The announcement was made by PM David Cameron and Nissan chief operating officer Toshiyuki Shiga during a visit by the Prime Minister to the car giantâs headquarters in Yokohama, Japan. It follows last monthâs news that Sunderland will also produce a new compact car, based on the Invitation concept model, from next year. The two new models between them will create more than 3,000 jobs in the UK car industry â 625 at Nissan and the remainder throughout the supply chain â and take the firmâs Wearside workforce to a record 6,225. The factory will build about 80,000 units of the new model a year. Introducing a new shift will see both production lines operating âaround the clockâ for the first time in the plantâs 26-year history, taking potential annual production to more than 550,000 vehicles. Todayâs announcement means the plant will be building five models â the new car will join the Qashqai, Juke, the all-electric Leaf and the Invitation on the production line. The latest model represents an additional £127million investment by Nissan in its Sunderland operation and is supported by an offer of £8.2million from the Governmentâs Regional Growth Fund. Speaking during his visit to Japan, Prime Minister David Cameron said: âItâs fantastic news that Nissan will be building its new hatchback model in the UK and that it expects to create more than 1,000 jobs at the Sunderland plant and in the supply chain across the country. âIt is proof of the strength and vitality of the British manufacturing industry that leading companies like Nissan are expanding their production in the UK.â Mr Shiga said: âIn Europe, Nissan has achieved record growth in recent years by providing innovative, customer-focused models like Qashqai and Juke that are designed, developed and produced within the region. âNissan already produces more vehicles in Europe than any other Asian manufacturer and the model announced today will bring world-class quality and leading technology to our customers at the heart of the European C-segment. âI would also like to thank the UK Government for its strong and sustained support which allows us to continue making significant, long-term investment in our Sunderland operation.â More details about the new car including pricing, engine line-up and equipment levels will be released closer to its sales launch. l A major recruitment campaign is now taking place at Nissan Sunderland Plant. Roles immediately available include engineering, maintenance and production supervisor positions. Candidates can find all information at www.careersatnissan.co.uk
I hate they way Cameron has slithered his way into this announcement as if to take credit for giving us poor northerners jobs. The decision to give sunderland the new car to build was down to the proven quality they have produced since the plant opened. Not down to the intervention of some self promoting two faced lying scumbag bag politician. Well done Nissan/ Sunderland
Could not agree more. This is great news but NO credit at all to this CONDEM government. It is purely and simply down to the hard work and sheer quality of the workforce in Sunderland. Well done to everyone concerned.
Why do Nissan want to build in Sunderland and not Japan,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,because our lads build em better. as an aside how many cars are built on Tyneside. none because of the work ethic. Ie they dont have one.
I don't think they are all Mackem's working in industrial jobs... by law 35% of industrial work staff must be foreign.
Actually it might have something to do with it being cheaper in Sunderland than in Yokohama. Japan is not some backwater than can get cheap employment and as land is at a premium, factory costs would also be very high.
Indeed but on the same note, there would be much cheaper locations to manufacture Cars than in the North East of England.
Perhaps but with the necessary available land? Also, the cars made here are probably mainly sold here too. Transportation costs are brought down! Our import/export duty is actually quite low so any overseas sales would be cheap (including the usual favourable exchange rates)
Sorry for bringing this up but just read this. ....................................................................... WORK on a massive new supermarket which could create up to 500 new jobs could start this month. Developer Terrace Hill has completed a funding deal to develop a Sainsburyâs store on the Jennings site in Riverside Road, Southwick. It is now expected to award the contract to build the 100,000 sqft store to construction firm Bowmer & Kirkland. The store will provide 400-500 jobs â about 90 per cent of which Sainsburyâs says will go to workers in Sunderland. In a report on the scheme, consultants Nathaniel Litchfield and Partners said the spending power of new employees and the boost to Wearside-based suppliers would create scores of additional posts. âThe total gross employment impact of the proposed foodstore could be 545â605 jobs,â they said. âThis would result in a 6.3 per cent reduction in current levels of unemployment in the Sunderland area.â Plans for the food store, six pump petrol filling station and 517 space car park were first submitted in November 2010. Terrace Hill chief executive Philip Leech said: âThe securing of forward funding is a significant step for the project, and underlines Terrace Hillâs ability to source financing for our developments, in spite of the challenging funding environment. âWe continue to see potential for further growth in the foodstore sector, and believe that our activities in this market will generate good returns on behalf of our shareholders as we progress this and our pipeline of opportunities.â The Sainsburyâs store is one of several new supermarkets set to be built across Wearside. Morrisons is planning a multimillion-pound new store and petrol station at Armstrong Road Retail Park, in Washington, which create 350 jobs. Work has started on a new Tesco supermarket at Roker Retail Park and there are plans for a Tesco at Peel in Washington. Planning permission has been granted for a new Lidl store and other retail units in North Hylton Road, expected to bring 250 jobs The Echo reported in December that up to 500 jobs could be created after plans to build a major supermarket in Pennywell were unveiled ............................................................................ So if we take it the the 2 new Tesco's could maybe bring 700 jobs between them, that makes it a possibility of an extra 2300 jobs, plus Nissan, so in total it could reach nearly 2500 jobs for the area... Ok, many won't want to work for a supermarket, but for some a job is a job, and for those willing, seems like you may find one...
