Redknapp apparently offered Gazza the opportunity to coach the youngsters with Steve Gallen.

    http://www.setanta.com/ie/redknapp-offers-gazza-coaching-job/?

He is right in that the only person that can now help Gascoigne is the man himself, but I fear he is incapable of sorting himself out. It is sadly only a matter or time...

Yes, sadly a lost cause, due mostly to the illness but I've always felt with Gazza there was an element of indulgence.

Clearly a manic depressive or bi-polar as they now call it. It's becoming something of an annual event him falling off the wagon and time is surely running out for him. Such a shame as he really was the most talented English player I've seen...

How many 'routes back in to football' can you give him! A floored genius destined to self destruct!

I always thought bi-polar was a bear that swings both ways.

I find it hard to sympathise with this man. Sublimely talented, but pissed it up. How many times must people come to his rescue?

Is it an illness, or is he just a drunken waster?

You are quite correct, Uber ..................... I read the unofficial story of the Beach Boys and drummer Dennis Wilson was much the same except probably 100 times worse.
The repeated promises to regroup and refocus are forever trotted out but as everyone is aware, we can do little.

What is most upsetting is the image of Gazza in the Mail. He really has punished himself and his features have change much, for the worse.
All we can do is remember the good times and value them.

FYI the bloke is an idiot...
I say that as fact rather than opinion.
I (we) met him twice when we were staying at Paul mersons house near Yarm, When he was at borough (I grew up with Paul btw)
Both times we turned up he was pissed and asleep in his spae room and we crashed in another. Absolute genius on the field and the goal against Scotland when he mugged henry(/() is one of my all time best ever..just when he woke up he was a complete idiot.

believe it or not if you want; makes no diffrence to me as I was there.

Flawed genius just ours is <ok>

Some VERY harsh comments. Like it or not, alcoholism IS an illness, no different than cancer, diabetes, or whatever. Would we be castigating someone for having these illnesses? I think not. Gazza, like millions before (and no doubt after) him is sick. His illness is public due to his fame, had he been anyone else, this would go unnoticed.

I hear what you're saying and have no wish to start an argument with you, but the thing with alcoholism is that you have to work at it - it's not some overnight problem one acquires. Rather like nicotine or some other drug addiction it is not the first, second, third, fourth etc. (in this case) drink that turns the subject into an alcoholic, it's the excessive and sustained use over a considerable period of time that creates the problem. There cannot be too many people that remain unaware that prolonged, excessive alcohol consumption will lead to some form of dependency, and that that in turn will lead to health issues, yet people continue to choose to drink excessively and regularly. There is presumably some other underlying personality problem or issue in the subject's life that has made them choose to turn to drink, and these are (I would assume) particularly difficult to identify and address.

Sadly, Gazza is going the same way as George Best and there's bugger all anybody can do about it if the man himself lacks the desire to help himself. People will continue to offer him help again and again, but I fear, like Best, this is ultimately doomed to fail.

    ----

On the subject of cigarettes, I continue to try to get the second Mrs Uber to quit, but this is also futile unless she wishes to herself. She says that she will give up one day, but that one day never comes. I am sure that she has no intention of quitting because she knows it will be difficult. In her mind she is already defeated, so why bother? How do you go about changing this mindset and giving people the belief that they can succeed?

If I was to give her a bottle of poison and a pipette and suggest that she puts a drop on her tongue at regular intervals everyday and that at some undetermined point in the future this poison will kill her, would she do it? Being married to me the answer is 'maybe' (see Churchill), yet so many people continue smoking in full knowledge that that is exactly what they're doing. I find that incredible, particularly when they have young children that presumably they want to see grow to adulthood.

Probably the best English player that I've ever seen play in my adult life. Sheer genius!

Unfortunately, as often seems to be the case, he simply couldn't handle the "celebrity" that came with his God-given talent.
Only a matter of time imo.

Thank you Sheff. Gazza is quite obviously seriously mentally ill and has been for a very long time, probably since he was a child. Although ADHD is massively over diagnosed he was a genuine textbook example of it and its sad course in some adults - the hyper behaviour (I remember the stories of how he could just not sit still from the 1990 World Cup) and OCD developing into compulsive behaviour, addictions and depression. His alcoholism is a symptom of his illnesses. He may well be of limited intelligence Queens, so what?

It may be impossible to help him but that is no reason to stop trying. Good for Redknapp.

Giving up smoking was the hardest thing I've done. I thoroughly enjoyed having a smoke and I really didn't want to stop.
I new I would be forced to stop one day by way of a heart attack / stroke.

That was my piece of ammunition.................. I wanted to stop on my terms, not because I had a heart attack.
Two young grandchildren was the other.

Do I miss it? Yes of course but the truth is, I don't need to fight it because I have no intention to take it up again.
Everyday, I see people standing outside of their work places, just like I used to, having a dart and I'm really glad that I'm not there doing the same.
I feel so much better, I don't stink ( well, not from smoking anyway ) and I'm not sinking over $9,000.00 a year into it.

I sure I will always get the urge once in a blue moon to have one but having given up once, I have no intention of doing it again.
Best of luck with your good lady, mate.
