I've often wanted an OT thread where, when tired of discussing our beloved LFC (YNWA!), we could engage in debate about other areas of philosophy and science which interest us.

The need for this type of thread was confirmed by the hijacking of one of Sisu's threads about Astronomy and Dark Matter, which rapidly was derailed with discussions about God, Morality and Evolution.

And therefore I decided to create this thread: Frank and Dave's Philosophical Kebab Emporium!

Inspired by Alan Partridge (see below), I named it after Foredeck and Dirty Frank as I've seen them engage in considered debate on philosophical topics on many occasions, and the spirit of their interactions is what I'd like to capture here.

The only rules I'd insist on is to respect other peoples' opinions and to wait until people have finished debating a topic (or there's an acceptable break in posting) before starting upon another one. That way it reduces the chances of debating over people.

Over to you, guys. Channel your inner Plato, muster your Socratic wisdom and let fly with you Russellian logic! I now declare this philosophy emporium open for business! <cheers>

Not the first post, nor the first poster, I was hoping for. <doh>

Livtor, there are 18 threads that are football related on the first page alone. If you want to discuss football, bump one of them or create one like you already have. I too don't like too many OT threads but we have a lot of threads footy related already out. The CL and Rival watch ones should kick up soon with that coming back into the fold today.

Constructive criticism, CCC.... how about you add an initiatory poll, so that at least we know where the good folks here stand before they spout any further.

A poll about their Belief in God/Creator, smth like:

    I believe that...

    1. He watches you, knows you, foresees you, makes you & your future. You are basically a widget encoded in his almost infinite App.

    2. As above, but with heavenly compassion, love, and a special place in him for Earth and Man, this blessed little world, where he often sends down his prophets to show us the good way.

    3. He created and unleashed the physical world, but stays out of its natural operations.

    4. He never was. All there ever was was energy, physics, chance, mutation, permutation, selection, survival, will.

    5. As above, but free will amongst intelligent beings does not really exist either. Constitution and the immediate calculus of reward-punishment decide responses.

    That's the spirit (<ghost>), Livtor! <ok>

Although I'd quibble with the wording, your number 4 most closely approaches my view.

Number 5, for me, is a debate topic on its own.

loads of threads i don't have much interest in, but don't feel the need to go on there and say it.

was quite nice having a semi intelligent discussion for a change like i said, as my other half just waffles bollocks to me,and if i can mix that with talking about footie as well, result.

yes this is a footie forum, but forums are designed for people to interact and share their opinion and thoughts with each other, keeps the board going even if its something of no interest to some.

a board just talking about footie don't work, i used to mod one, and it died for that reason lol.

If he thinks it's bad now, wait until the summer and the gap between end of season and world cup!!!! <yikes> RHC stories actually become interesting at that point. <whistle>

Anyway, my family (immediate) has literally all 5 of those, me personally, still on the fence with a lot of it. I just try to live by good morals, do unto others as you would to yourself, and am big on karma, that **** is real folks!

Well, so put that poll up, CCC... Otherwise you get inconsistent ramblings that betray themselves over and again. On Sisu's thread I read posters sashaying all over the place.

I vote 4 too, btw, but 5 worries me and it just might be true.

If God is real then we would be talking about a being so poweful that he is able to create a universe something we know very little about. I suggest that our tiny minds simply could not comprehend such a being so to dismiss God or to say that you believe in God is futile.

You either have faith or not.

    It's not as simple, gonz.

There are people (here and everywhere) whose faith tells them God created them on this blessed little planet in a 7 day project, and then there are people whose faith allows them to digest everything that modern physics has to offer with the caveat that God/Creator enabled all original creation (big bang or the like).

The latter is option 3 in the poll. The former option 2. The gulf between these two faiths is OBSCENE.

But faith is still required as in your example there will be plenty of people around to offer a counter argument to any form of religion and some of these facts may have a cetain weight but again do these people truly understand the universe around them? If the answer is no then to dismiss the existence of God is idiotic once again we are back to simple faith.
