BBC TV series to celebrate the anniversary of punk... Some of the most prominent figures of the punk era are to take part in the programmes including John Lydon, Siouxsie Sioux and Mick Jones. The season â to commemorate 35 years since three-chord wonders achieved national prominence â will be spearheaded by a BBC4 series Punk Britannia, which will look at the roots and the impact of the movement. The three-part series includes contributions from Sex Pistols star Lydon â known in the late 1970s as Johnny Rotten â as well as The Clashâs Jones and Sioux, who fronted Siouxsie And The Banshees. Other major names from the era include Pete Shelley and his Buzzcocks bandmate Howard Devoto, who went on to front Magazine, The Fallâs Mark E Smith, Generation X singer Billy Idol and Adam Ant. The programmes look at the influence of mid-70s New York guitar acts and pub rock on the punk scene, how it went mainstream and its evolution and lasting influence. Further programmes on BBC4 will include punk performances from the corporationâs vaults including punkâs main players as well as others from the scene including Dr Feelgood and The Au Pairs. There will also be a documentary about punk poet John Cooper Clarke â known for tracks such as Evidently Chickentown, Health Fanatic and Beasley Street â featuring admirers and friends such as Steve Coogan and Arctic Monkey Alex Turner. BBC Radio 6 Music will also be part of the celebration, with Lydon, Sioux, The Damnedâs Captain Sensible and Patti Smith each presenting their musical selections for hour long Playlist programmes in June.
Should be good. My memory's getting hazy but seem to remember seeing John Cooper Clarke at Spring St. Should be a laugh to see Steve Coogan talking seriously without slipping into Partridge mode.
Can't beat a bit of JCC...

Not old enough, but my uncle Steve got me into the Sex Pistols aged 4 ...which then extended into finding out about all other punk bands. I must have been the only kid at school who knew that Gordon is a moron, a creep and a puff As for mid-70s New York guitar acts - I saw New York Dolls live 3 or 4 years ago, well, what's left of them. John Cooper Clarke walked into me, drunk, in the crowd during (I think it was) Alice Gold, at Freedom Festival last year.
From what I know some of the lesser known punk bands got into the national front **** and started playing racist crap which some of the dumber skinheads got into and the newer racist boneheads hence the false **** about skinheads been racists .. I once saw a so called punk band in stockton playing to a mix of punks n boneheads singing White power **** .. I once had a couple of these bone head 'skinheads' ask me why I was into black mans music when I was playing Trojan stuff.. Lol
Point being why I don't like punk ... Scruffy bastards the lot of them... Shock horror my daughter is a goth. Grrr
music genres eh ? its all one fuzzy ball and one of the great reasons for not reading comments about a fave tune on youtube ... some people yearn to be labeled
