For what? For the creation of the immensely dangerous and barbaric, Islamic State.

We should have just left Saddam in charge, at least he kept them in check.

Saddam wasn't in charge of Afghanistan, he was in charge of Iraq.
The Taliban were in charge of Afghanistan. <ok>

No doubt sooner or later troops will be on the ground in Iraq...So from Afghanistan to Iraq, out of the frying pan, into the fire.

Been doing my old man's military background as he was a regular from 1932 to 1948 with the RA eventually becoming a battery sergeant major. During his time he survived Dunkirk after spending a whole day in the water, shipped out to India and survived Kohima Ridge and Jap grenades but then the troop ship he was on was stopped and placed on standby in the Med for a rush job into Palestine but troops were flown in from Europe.

    Soldiering never changes does it?

He was never one for medals and reunions as he had moved on from those days, in his words, yet he never criticised enemy soldiers nor spoke of special achievements except for the Chindits. He said many a time he had strapping young lads go into the jungle on scouting missions and return weeks later absolutely worn out and skin and bone. Yet many of them did it more than once but he singled them out as heroes.

Afghan ops were initially to destroy poppy fields predominantly, not officially but that was the 'tasking'.

The powers that be seemed to think that if we could destroy their source of income (heroin) then we'd nip them in the bud. I wouldn't have thought the poppy fields are in any worse position now than they've ever been, but at the same time, they've quietened down and now we have a new enemy in our sights.

Iran aren't flinching, they do not give a single **** what the west do to the arab nations as long as the west stays out of Iran... plan B needed.

FWIW - The Army came out of Serbia (I think it was) around 10 years ago - but they were still occupying over there until the last group actually came out around 2 years ago - just because the troops have,m according to the media, come out - doesn't mean that they won't still be there!

I'm always slightly aggrieved when the only figured used are those who have died...what about the others whose lives have been turned upside down and have lost the entire lower half of their body, etc...
