Christ Whalebones smartened itself up a bit since i last went in!! Will be in Pave for a few tonight.
All great pubs, bar polar bear, which I haven't seem since it's revamp. I shall be going into a few of those tomorrow afternoon in fact, sun will be out after all.
I've not managed to get into the Polar Bear since Dave took it over, I'll try and remedy that in the next couple of weeks.
Also, The George on Land of Green Ginger, since its facelift & Sailmakers on High Street are excellent.
I was in there not long ago and I'm pretty sure the carpet and chairs don't look that bright when you're actually in there.
I used to work with a few lads who lived round Bridlington Ave and there used to be some lively arguements about East Riding and Whalebone and which one pulled the best pint of Tetley.
Music's too loud in there, I know I'm getting on a bit (23 now), but there's no need for a DJ in the Empress on a Saturday night. I encountered it once and haven't been back since.
Wellington Inn - currently up for sale if anyone is after a decent pub with a good reputation! Ye Olde White Harte is just superb, that and Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem in Nottingham - are there any better, historic pubs left in the country than those 2? Always had a soft spot for Manchester 'Manny' Arms and it's famous good old '**** on the grass'. Next door to Manny Arms has apparently opened up as a bistro/craft ale bar, and another is opening up next door to Lion & Key. I've always heard good things about Old English Gentleman, but never been in. Probably the worst place I've been in the city is Lounge on Princes Ave - nothing wrong with it, it's just that it isn't very well organised - reminds me of when you go out in the bars in Leeds - just a mass scrum to get an over-priced drink.
It has indeed, it's called The Old House. I've been in twice, on an evening when hardly anyone else was in. Nice beers, craft stuff and ales like most of the pubs round there now. Remains to be seen if it gets busy. Also, noticed the building you mentioned near Lion & Key getting gutted out last week. Quite a thin little venue, but in an ideal location and looks an interesting sort of building. Old Town, I maintain, is the place to go if you want decent beer.
Cheers will have a look in both. Just looking through tonights Mail and the Flashback. Theres pictures of Polar Bear and the landlord from 82 Tony Coombs and one from 1937. Also pics of Bonny Boat, Star of the West and Bass House . Theres also a picture of the Campari Milk Bar with the licensee Barry Medforth. It offered "3 course meals prepared by a Cordon Bleu cook at a top price of 5s 6d!!
