Okay so my situation isn't too different to most people living in Hull atm in the sense that I'm unable to find work. I'm a young lad (well a lot younger than most of you on here ;)) and I chose not to go to uni. Its ridiculous though, I've not had a proper full time job in ages now and its really starting to get me down. I hate not having a routine and its putting me under a great amount of stress finding money to pay rent/bills. Does anyone know anywhere to apply too? I'm a fast learner and will give pretty much anything a go, but most replies I get from employers is that they won't even give me an interview as they want more experience in a candidate. I know its not usually the type of thread you find on here but I've completely ran out of ideas now. Any advice is most welcome!

Have you registered with an employment agency. Some of the work they offer might not be to your liking but it might get you going again

Try going in and signing up at Brook Street. I went there a few years ago and got a temp job which led to a permant one. At my work loads of people still get sent from brook street and end up been permemt.

If you can clear it with the Job centre, doing some voluntary work (which doesn't interfere with availability for work or ability to look for a job) might get you some experience. That's what I did, but it was before the millionaire-fascists took control of the DWP. Nowadays if you show willingness to take a placement you might end up working for some exploitative multi-national of their choosing doing something menial for free and risk losing your dole if you refuse, and denying a paid job to someone-else in the process....

Even before that though, the market was all about experience and the ability to roll your sleeves up. If you can prove that somehow then it will strengthen your C.V no-end.

Good luck, and DON'T GIVE UP and believe in yourself!

Have you ever considered working as a Private Investigator?

I'm sure a few of us could club together for your first job, seeking out the wum that is commonly known as Lesta Gangsta aka Wood 'n' Kane. To give you a head start I'll point out that he may have changed his avatar by this point in time <laugh><laugh><laugh>

Now then Matt, haven't seen you on here in ages.

Firstly, PMed you on this topic.

Secondly, while you've got all this free time, come to mine and play some Xbox some time.

Took too long for someone to say that.

    Of course

    Not.

Though I understand there's big £££ in being an escort, and unless you're brad Pitt, I think your market maybe limited to woofters.

Failing that, go join the military. Would have loved to have done that myself, epic career.

I wrote a similar thread about 18 months and have been in and out of work since. Try checking Jobs Go Public. Its council jobs, there's some decent jobs on there, that is pay okay. I've just applied for a Park Rangers job and litter picking.

I wouldn't join the military unless you fancy being sent somewhere very unpleasant on the whim of whichever scumbag politician is in charge at the time. If you're near uni level they will make you try out for officer anyway which will entail working with a load of silver-spooned and priviliged arseholes so unless you fancy kissing these peoples arses for the rest of your life I wouldn't bother. I know this having tried it myself, being of near uni/ at uni education level about 15-20 years ago

You could do alot worse than joining the military for a few years, I did 16yrs in the RAF and if it wasn't for that time, I wouldn't be were I am now! The armed forces is not the same armed forces as it was 15-20 yrs ago.

If that is not your chosen path, no worries, however, I would suggest that you adjust your stance on finding a job. At this time employers can pick and choose who they want, saying 'you will do anything' will not endear you to an employer! You need to make your CV, cover letter and experience fit what job you are going for at that moment. Having a vague cover all CV and cover letter, saying what a great team player you are, that you work hard or saying that you can do the same stuff as everyone else will not get you a job. I know, I see hundreds of CV's like that everyday and thats from foreigners here in Thailand trying to find a job.

You have to stand out, how you do that depends on what you have done and interpreting it to what you want to do. A good example is something stupid like you organised your last place of works christmas party (sounds stupid I know), however, you managed to put together and organise a company project. (this is just one example, you will have stuff you have done and dont realise, that you can use it on your CV). Make it interesting, make it stand out, even make it fun to read! Like you said, there are loads of people out of work right now, stand out of that crowd, make the most of who and what you are.

If you have time volunteer, plenty of places will allow this, an internship at a company (although for slave labour wages) will give you experience in a particular field. Take vocational courses, plenty of professional jobs dont need degrees, I do not have a degree, yet I am a Director of an investment company!!

Go abroad, there are jobs available, try offshore, north sea oil and gas are recruiting heavily at the moment. You will need to do all the offshore courses for that of course, see if you can get help to pay for that.

Start your own business in something you enjoy, that way it doesn't get boring quickly when it doesn't go so well at first.

Join networking events and business social media like Linked in, sounds daft, but ever heard the saying 'its not what you know'?

If all of this sounds like something you have tried, or you think it just doesn't work, try it and find out, looking for a job properly is a full time job!

You can always PM me if you need any help, will be happy to give you some advice!

If you are thinking of joining the military you could always join the US military. After you get out you would have the option of becoming a US citizen. You could then move to California or something.

    Not my favourite subject.

First experience far out ways qualification. With one exception. Driving.
You have to use your network of friends family and sites like here. Use Facebook and twitter, make it clear what you can and cannot or don't want to do.
Picture yourself as a new business. You need to market yourself.
Use a proper email address. miffsniffer@..... will get you nothing. Have you thought of a business card? A plain card with your name, contact details (less your home address but with town/city). Your appearance has to work for the type of job you are looking for.
Get out and knock on doors, reps do it so why don't you. Don't just leave a CV ask if there s any work, log where you have been. Carry a note book with a list of people who could give you references straight away. Be honest with yourself and potential employers, if you know that scraping **** off toilets is nt for you don't just refuse the job, say its not for you and you never know. Lastly smile, it works.

Can you give some more info matt how old, married any qualifications etc. because my advice is get to college and Uni. Hard work will get you places sometimes or just 40 years of back breaking labour.
I worked hard in dead end jobs and got nowt to show for it. Went to Uni and found a lot of em didn't like hard work there, I did. So now it's really well paid jobs without the bad back

Some very good advice in there. <ok>

My nephew joined the army and he's just moved to Germany, he's loving every minute of it, though judging by his Facebook page, he seems to be either naked, or pissed(or both) most of the time.
