For those of a certain age and who like their music loud, this is sad news. Rumours have been circulating for some time that a member of AC/DC was seriously ill, and now we know it's Malcolm Young, the real power behind the band. From a personal point of view I'm hating it that the rock stars of my youth are now in decline due to their advancing years rather than either drug or alcohol fuelled excess. We've got Tony Iommi and Vivian Campbell being treated for the Big C, Lemmy cancelling show after show due to ill health and now this. I wish them all well.
Sad news indeed. A great, great band. What I would have given to one of the 200,000 in Buenos Aires at their River Plate gig in December 2009.
I was reading about this today but there was not much detail apart from Malcolm Young was not very well at the mo. Sad news if true. I just found this interesting link, worth reading if you have 5min spare! http://www.theguardian.com/music/2014/apr/16/acdc-not-retiring-brian-johnson
Night Prowler a slower, bluesy dirge - superb!
Ride On - more melodic - but just as good!
If you don't have time for the link in my last post it basically says the band will carry on but Malcolm will be having some time out. Hope he gets well if poss!
Very sad news. Saw them live three years ago and they were absolutely fantastic as ever. Malcolm is a very private person hence the lack of official statements. Up the Rsss I'm not so sure the band will carry on as I believe there is a 'pact' between the members that if one member "drops" out they won't keep on playing. It's everyone or nothing.
Real shame, my favourite band as a kid, Highway to Hell is still one of the first tapes err CD's..err albums ? that I make sure I have in the Car. Like Bon Scott
Its a miracle some of them have lasted as long as they have, it seems Ozzy is immortal as he should have died several times over, Lemmy as well. Its sad but they've probably packed more into their lives than the whole board put together. I don't think there's anything glamorous about blowing your head off with a shotgun or choking on your own puke so dying young is even worse from my POV.
Indeed. I like Brian Johnson, but he was never going to be Bon Scott. Have you ever heard any Rhino Bucket? Talk about AC/DC-Bon Scott rip-offs!
The album I have is called "And Then It Got Ugly". It is shamelessly a Bon Scott era AC/DC clone, but quite enjoyable if you can get past that. I rather liked early Kingdom Come, who were forever pilloried for being Led Zep clones.
Has there been any indication about what it is that ails him - there was a runour reported (and reported as such) yesterdy morning on one of the local radio stations here in Toronto which said that what he had was terminal but I have not heard that again - nor even confirmed
The short answer is that nothing's been confirmed. I'm pretty sure I read something some months ago about possible dementia, but this never resurfaced so could be untrue. Whatever it is I wish the man well; he and his band produced a significant part of the soundtrack to my life.
Saw AC/DC at Hammersmith Odeon (for those of us that remember it). f**king fantastic. My ears were ringing for days afterwards.
Massive band, one of the best ever. Having saw them twice both gigs are in my top-10 concerts ever. Hope he recovers from his sickness soon. Malcolm Young is the real leader of this australian powerhouse and the whole thing is based on his tight riffin rhythmguitar. Here is a great example of it from Bon Scott era:
OK, that's not good and I really do hope he can recover from this if that's the case. Sadly Malcolm would need to learn again to walk let alone play guitar. My uncle had a minor stroke about two years back and has got much better but he is a pale of his former self.
