Burnsy has just tweeted that the improvements to the A63/Castle Street junction have been approved. Start date: Post 2015 Cost: £129 million to £192 million Plan - To improve a 0.9 miles (1.5km) stretch of the A63 at Castle Street by lowering the level of the road into a cutting by approximately 7.6 yards (7 metres) at Mytongate Junction. Ferensway and Commercial Road would pass over, being raised by approximately 1.09 yards (1 metre), creating a split level junction. http://www.highways.gov.uk/roads/road-projects/a63-castle-street-improvement/ It's going to be a bit of a nightmare while the works are done, but it needs to happen if the industrial areas to the east of the city are to be developed and we're going to link the Marina and Fruit areas back to the city centre. Overall, I think this will be of massive benefit to the city.
I've just found an image that I assume shows how it's proposed to look... please log in to view this image The problem is, it starts along way before Castle Street and finishes the same distance past it, so doesn't address the issue of linking the waterfront back to the city centre.
Bloody hell, that does make linking the city and the waterfront worse! Also, it looks like that will be one helluva nightmare while work is ongoing...
Someone please explain what the buildings are either side of the road, so I can picture the location. I'm not familiar with Castle St. Thanks in advance
If you were driving into town, you'd be going from right to left. So you'd have the marina on your right, Princess Quay on the left (off picture), the buildings to the middle right are Kingston Retail park, replete with Whittington and Cat pub (which looks like a circus tent). The junction turns left to go towards St.Stephens, or straight on to go towards The Deep.
I don't think that drawing represents 0.9 miles of improvements. I seem to recall seeing other drawings one of which showed a landbridge (like the proposed Ferensway/Commercial Rd junction) over the 'cut away' section close to the marina but for pedestrians only.
Looking at that image again, is there perhaps a walkway under the road between Princess Dock St and Humber Dock St?
Needs doing but will be a major pain in the arse for me personally as my office is on the north side of Castle street so driving to work will be a nightmare.
Looks like a footbridge over the road in the top left corner, with the building next to it being presumably Warehouse 6 (Ask Restaurant).
Could always go by public transport. Then when you get stuck in the road works you'll have someone to talk to.
I thought that looked more like a traffic sign than a bridge, to build these things nowadays it needs wheelchair access etc, so I'd expect it to be much bigger.
According to Dull Daily there will be three footbridges and all traffic lights removed. http://www.thisishullandeastriding....tory-19409595-detail/story.html#axzz2X2UYaN37
Taken from this link: http://www.highways.gov.uk/roads/road-projects/a63-castle-street-improvement/ How will the scheme be carried out? We would widen the eastbound carriageway to three lanes between Mytongate and Market Place, with the nearside lane being marked for local weaving traffic. The westbound carriageway would have two lanes, as at present.Provide pedestrian footbridges at Porter Street, in front of Princes Quay shopping centre and at Market Place, to allow pedestrians to cross above Castle Street. We propose to close accesses from Castle Street on safety grounds, alternative accesses would be provided. What are the benefits? The objectives of this scheme are to improve access to the Port of Hull, relieve congestion and improve safety. In addition, the project seeks to reduce the impact of the barrier caused by Castle Street between the city centre to the north and developments, tourist and recreational facilities to the south.
Great news so long as pedestrian access to the Marina is there, removing the need to cross that busy road. Seems crazy for it not to have happened anyway, so much traffic there (much of it lorries and coaches off the Ferries) and many, many vehicles that simply flout the red lights. Puts a lot of people off bothering to go there. Great news.
