Taff...this is such a shame. I guess it must be doubtful if they will survive many more. it's great to have a sugar daddy until he pops his clogs or goes down the tubes. I remember many many good times at the Gnoll dishing it out to many. I also remember interminable Boxing days, freezing my bollocks off and failing to beat Aberavon for so many years, I fear to look. Amateur days, of course....the sight of Rob Hughes struggling to breathe and Bruce Bradley chucking up on the centre spot will never leave me. Looking back, I'm not sure what Bruce was doing there at the time, we must have scored a penalty or something.....we certainly hadn't scored a try!!!!!
Hi FrankfurterBlue! Bruce and Rob were in the same Neath Grammar School XV - as were Jeff Herdman, Kevin Bowring, Alan Meredith, Dai Richards & Ian Hopkins. Hopefully, Neath will rise again from the ashes like a phoenix!
Given the number of “lower League” players drafted in to play, I suppose anything under 100 is a moral victory .....
Taff.... a real mix in that lot for sure. Hoppie was a year above me and Dai Richards a year or two below, I reckon. I remember Kevin Bowring was something big with London Welsh later and Alan Meredith (and his older brother who's name I can't remember) were big shots with Swansea rather than Neath RFC. But most of those (all?) were age group Welsh players too, I reckon.
I'd take my hat off to you lot (if I had one), your memory function is amazing - especially at your ages I have trouble remembering last week!
When we had a proper welsh league instead of just 4 regional teams the rugby was more exciting, I think welsh rugby clubs are the losers here and are being neglected big time as we see with Neath one of our giant clubs of yesteryear.
