And the 36-year-old, out of contract at Sunderland this summer, has offers from four clubs - one of which is Wolves. p:nth-of-type(2)","sizes":[[8,8]],"hideOnSensitiveArticle":true,"relativePos":"after","additionalClass":"in-article","name":"div-gpt-ad-vip-slot","type":"VIP"}" data-response-start="26555.000000000004" data-type="gpt" data-google-query-id="CJKVyYL5odQCFS-g7Qod0vwNsA" data-timer-slot-rendered="32157.995" data-rendered-width="8" data-rendered-height="8" data-response-end="57949.00000000001" style="background: transparent; border: 0px; margin-bottom: 24px; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; overflow: hidden; z-index: 1; height: 8px; max-height: 8px;"> The Ireland international is likely to play just one more season before hanging up his boots, as he hopes to be on the plane for Russia, should Ireland qualify for the 2018 World Cup. Despite a storied career, O’Shea is yet to play at football’s grandest stage. With Sunderland yet to appoint a new manager following David Moyes’ resignation, O’Shea’s future - as well as the six others whose deals expire - is still uncertain. Sunderland's new manager has some key issues to resolve - here's what could be in his inbox According to a report in the Irish Times, a source close to O’Shea has told them he hopes to remain at the Stadium of Light, but needs guarantees from whoever takes the hotseat on Wearside. The report quotes a source close to O’Shea as saying: “John, ideally, wants to remain with Sunderland but only if he’s going to play. “If their new manager is not overly keen on John, then he has to leave, because his Irish place is dependent on him being active at club level. John has never been to a World Cup - he has played Champions League finals, FA Cup finals, captained Sunderland in the League Cup final and been to the Euros. But he wants to go to a World Cup. “He knows he may not get there if he’s sitting on a bench for the last year of his career. Four clubs are interested in him [all in the Championship]. Wolves are one of those.” Whether O’Shea has a future at Sunderland remains to be seen. However, the club’s finances are poor and they look likely to lose Lamine Kone and Papy Djilobodji in the transfer window, while Jason Denayer’s loan deal ended. Five Sunderland youngsters who could benefit from regular football in the Championship That would leave O’Shea as the only senior centre-back in the squad. ol>li:nth-of-type(2)","sizes":[[300,250],[300,254],[9,4]],"hideOnSensitiveArticle":true,"relativePos":"after","additionalClass":"in-article","name":"div-gpt-ad-in-article-slot","referenceNode2":".article-body > p:nth-last-of-type(4)","type":"inArticleMPU6","relativePos2":"after"}" data-response-start="26556" data-type="gpt" data-google-query-id="CJOVyYL5odQCFS-g7Qod0vwNsA" data-timer-slot-rendered="32648.995" data-rendered-width="300" data-rendered-height="250" style="background: transparent; border: 0px; margin-bottom: 24px; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; overflow: hidden; z-index: 1; height: 250px; max-height: 250px;"> With that in mind, a deal to keep the Irishman probably makes sense. O’Shea is believed to be a major dressing room leader at the Stadium of Light and given he’s already started taking his coaching badges, a role as a player coach might suit both parties, offering the 36-year-old his way into coaching too. With five games remaining, Ireland are joint-top of qualifying group D with Serbia, each on 11 points. That’s four ahead of Wales and Austria in joint-third. Don't doubt that he's good enough at this level, but he'll still be too slow, he'll still switch off and he'll still be a **** captain. He'll sitll cost us goals cause where he's weak he's finished. I hope we let him go personally.
Agreed Bri, We should now be in transition and building a squad of players that can stick together and have a few years together. O'Shea will hold that progression back by a season in a vital position. Thanks for the service, John, but cheerio.
Dressing room leader? Leading them into what? He's been ok for us but I feel it's time for him to move on. We need big, strong and mobile CBs ideally with selling on potential and he's none of that.
I'd normally agree, and actually like him, but I feel it's time to clear everyone out and rebuild a club, team and spirit. I'm borderline with O'Shea but not convinced. If he definitely wants to commit then he could be a good player in this division.
Time to move on for me. He's Been out of his depth for a few seasons now, not really his fault he's been thrown in time and time again.
My worry about this 40% cut is it still makes most of them on way way more than the championship average. Fortunately O'Shea is out of contract so he'll be offered even less than 40% if we offer him a new contract.
Overstated his welcome by 2 or 3 seasons. If he's getting other offers no one should be standing in his way.
Top culprit in the decanio senario was he not, football wise too slow as well turns like a supertanker
Am I reading this right, he,wants to stay to enhance his World Cup dream and not He wants to stay to enhance Sunderland's chances of getting back up in one go. If its all about sentence one then bye bye John and thanks for your efforts. If its sentence two then bye bye John cos your times up.
There is no substitute for experience and he has this by the barrow load at all level. Two more years to help bring on the lesser experienced suits me. He has as much as Kone, whose attitude is the problem, which is not the case here. Given the choice I would let Kone go first.
Let O'Shea go and sell Kone is what I'd do, we've missed the big payday but he should get us enough to buy someone more suited, maybe two or three.
Kone will be going anyway. O'Shea is out of contract. Lets get shot while we can imo. He's just too slow for any league.
I think it's been more of a case that he has been surrounded by players who have been out of their depth and he has been unable to cover for all of them, all of the time. In general though the back line has been better with him than without him. My concerns are more about this constant thing about there being something seriously wrong within the Club. If the problem is 'the players', then this is a great opportunity for a root and branch clear out and that would inevitably include the Club Captain.
