Put it this way, I'm more optimistic now Slade has gone. All depends on the new guy coming in. I'm convinced that this year was a case of the wrong guy in control at pitch level.
At this stage hope is more relevant than optimism. Much better than scepticsm. Let's hope the new man gives us a lift both on and off the pitch.
Whilst Slade, Young & Trollop are still there, and Slade defo will, then I am anything but optimistic. What can Slade add to the football club as Head of Football? It's a gesture by Tan. I reckon once he gets to Friday and he's not in his track suit ready for Saturday, he will be hankering for management again. He's been doing it for donkeys years, and I predict it's not something he can just give up. He'll be in management in League 1 or low Championship next season. I want a European (not Scandinavian!) manager with high tempo attacking football at all costs.
I think one of the most promising things was the language used when 'moving' Slade out of the way. Anything other than playoffs is failure. A quick glance around the division shows the type of investment required to compete at that level. By that I mean investing in retaining players (Marshall, Pilks etc.) as much as adding. I think our outward business will be very important. FFP means we'll certainly have to free up the wages tied up in Alf, Doyle, Adeyami, Dika, Macheda, Ameobi etc. Some of those are obviously much easier than others. A good summer on the outs could see us with some decent room financially. Then with big Russ in charge of recruitment.........
I want a European (not Scandinavian!) manager with high tempo attacking football at all costs. Martinez could well be available next week....You could do a lot worst......
See WoL have an article about Robert Page being considered. He denies it. Hope not, a younger version of Slade only with much less experience and no successes in his managerial cv. http://www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/cardiff-city-manager-hunt-port-11302133
Useless ??? It's know wonder you cant find a good manager saying stupid things like that....He would sort cardiff out and get you playing good football .....he is far from useless and more likely the reason is he once managed us.....you wont get far thinking like that....
oh ffs dai stop being fking stupid, its a fans opinion nothing more........ any thinking done by us means fk all 2 how the club works or how thy football turns out on zeee peetch ................. I would like 2 2nd that by stevo tho, I wouldn't want the Spaniard here either......he`s a fooking one trick pony, so fk any tip tap pick that ball out of our own net action, it can stay someone else`s issue and not ours init
Passing football is dying out a little at the moment, counter attacking is what's becoming more popular now
I'd take him any day of the week than have another season of Slade. Whilst Martinez's style of play has been sussed, Everton have basically become Wigan, and none of his teams know how to defend, I'd still bite your hand off for him to be our manger than watch a repeat of the past two seasons under Rob Page (if you believe WOL) You can't take away the job he did at Swansea in putting the building blocks in place for his predecessors to allow at decade of success to follow. That was no fluke. But he isn't going to come here so it's probably not worth discussing.
Ask the Everton fans what they think of him, then there was the brilliant state he left Wigan in. Everton are a total mess and all his success was built on the platform Moyes left him. Since then he's had them going backwards at a rate of knots. They'll struggle to stay up next year unless they sack him. They're almost certain to lose Lukaku this summer because of the terrible season they've endured. We don't need a manager for a one off cup run, we need a manager who can build a solid side and way of playing attacking football WITH THE TOOLS AT HIS DISPOSAL. Not a manager who'll try to turn our squad into Barca with the obvious end result. I'll leave the bit about saying stupid things as you are obviously an expert and I'll bow to your greater experience and knowledge in that area........
There's the conundrum though. Should the next manager be one identified as capable of going on to manage the side in the Premier league, or just a solid proven Championship type (Warnock/Lambert) who can get us over the line and then worry about what lies ahead after that? The third option is unthinkable to me. That is to recruit an unproven lower league ambitious young manager (not a dinosaur a la Slade) who we hope might come good. If that happens we'll either bomb next season or win the division by 10 points - I don't think Tan can take that chance. It will all probably come down to two major issues. 1) How much money is Tan going to put on the table for the new guy personally and just as important, how much will he have to spend. 2) Can this "new guy" work with an owner like Tan who has been alleged in the past to want to get too involved in playing issues as well as personnel recruitment and disposal.
Talk of Robert Page coming...WTF,, we took Slade and paid a fee, just when LO were about to get rid. Why would Tan aim so low? Got to be a smart, personable guy to inspire us, somebody you would want to lead the team and the fans....Malky Mackay perhaps....odds on that one pals?
Out of the 3 scenarios you paint I'd go for the first one Sparks. Give the guy a million quid bonus if he gets us up and then walks. I think you need a different type of manager to get you out of the Championship than to keep you in the Premiership. Some have managed it, but the exception and not the rule. The same for many players. I see WoL are suggesting we only need 2 new signings to provide a serious challenge next year. For me, it will come down to the manager we get and the style he wants to play. Many of us suggested we have the players to perform in a 4231 / 4141 formation so if the new man goes that way, I'd say 4-5 players given what we've got with 6-7 going out (given the returning loan players we have). Bringing Declan back into the fold together with Fabio, add another 1/2 decent full back and the back 5 is sorted. Centre mid doesn't look far off but a defensive mid with Dikgacoi or Gunner moving on might help. Another winger to supplement what we already have and a couple strikers, moving a couple on. If ALF has another season with us (can't remember when his contract is up) I'd have him as an option up top in a 4231 formation. Let's see what happens on the first point before worrying about the second. If it wasn't for Slade's new role a pairing of DJ upstairs and Bellamy as head coach would have been interesting. It'll be interesting to see how Newcastle players do in the Championship if they come down and the players stay. They didn't look up for a relegation battle, so Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday won't be to their taste.
Where is the proof Declan is better than (or even as good as) what we have? He hasn't pulled up any trees at L1 level on loan. He should be a superstar down there if he was going to improve an 8th place Championship club imo. We need a striker, there's no doubt about that. The ones that were bought by the 2 promoted sides cost the lions share of £15m between them.... We'll need to be very clever or lucky as we wont have £7m + to spend on a proven one even if there is one available.
Regarding Declan, my thoughts also Steve. Nice to see local boys coming through but in my view he hasn't got it and his track record on loan evidences that. Remote - Why would we want ALF back? He rarely makes the Wolves bench. We need a thorough clear out with new blood in. The sooner the RIGHT new manager gets appointed, the better so he can start building immediately. The longer it drags on the harder it will be to get the quality of player we need. Anyone know when the retained/press the eject button list will be published?
Can't see that happening until the new guy (whoever that might be) is in place..............unless of course it's going to be Trollope.
