New QPR boss Mark Hughes pits his team against MK Dons in the FA Cup Third Round replay on Tuesday night. Our friends at Opta look back at his managerial career - is there a pattern to his early results when starting a new job?

QPR can make FA Cup history on Tuesday night by becoming the first league side to play 17 consecutive games in the competition without a win. However, after a narrow defeat in his opening game at Newcastle, Mark Hughes will no doubt hope to win his first home game in charge of the Hoops. Here Opta look at his club managerial record so far:

    Blackburn Rovers

Hughes made his name as a manager at Blackburn but the Welshman’s tenure at Ewood Park got off to an inauspicious start. Arriving in September, Rovers had won three of their previous 10 games, but their first win under Hughes did not come until his 10th match (2-0 away against Fulham). His first game in charge saw them eliminated from the Carling Cup on penalties after a 3-3 draw at home to Bournemouth.

However, few could deny his overall success at the club. Rovers reached the 2004-05 FA Cup semi-finals in his first season in charge where they lost to eventual champions Arsenal. In his time at the club, he achieved the club's second-highest win percentage for a Premier League manager (39 per cent) behind only Kenny Dalglish (57 per cent).

    Manchester City

Like his first game at Rovers, Hughes’ bow at Manchester City was unsuccessful, as his side lost 4-2 at Aston Villa shortly before City’s buy-out by the Abu Dhabi United Group. Results improved after that with five wins in his first 10 games in charge.

Overall his win percentage in the Premier League (40 per cent) was above that of his predecessor Sven-Goran Eriksson (39 per cent), though with signings such as Robinho, Tevez and Gareth Barry, perhaps he might have been expected to achieve something better. His successor Roberto Mancini's win percentage is 60 per cent. He was sacked in December 2009. His only FA Cup game with at City saw them lose 3-0 at home to Nottingham Forest in the third round.

    Fulham

The arrival of Mark Hughes at a club does not appear to provide a short-term boost. When he arrived at Fulham they mustered only a 0-0 Premier League draw against Bolton.

Fulham won just two of his first 10 games in charge, although as with all three clubs so far, Fulham scored more goals (15) in the first 10 matches in his reign than in the 10 preceding matches (eight). Fulham’s best displays of the campaign came in the early rounds of the FA Cup, thrashing Peterborough 6-2 in the Third Round and Spurs 4-0 in the Fourth Round before losing to Bolton.

Similar to his time at Blackburn, Hughes was something of a slow burner at Craven Cottage, as the Whites won just two of their first 18 Premier League games with him in charge, before winning nine of the remaining 20, achieving their second-best Premier League finish (eighth). QPR will hope he can work his managerial magic a little quicker in his new role.
