I love the first day of the season; watching the tigers in short sleeves (ideally in your new shirt, not this season though!), checking out the new signings, all the optimism and expectation for the new season, the long wait finally being over. So.... what are your favourite opening day memories? Two games stand out for me: 1. Duane Darby hitting a hat-trick (and last minute winner?) to beat Darlo 3-2 in '96 2. The other side of the coin... losing to that spawny Drogba goal in the last minute 2 years ago. Singing 'we are top of the (premier) league' for the 10 minutes or so we were ahead was awesome!
David D'Auria away v Rotherham ages ago. First goal of the season anywhere in England. Fast Forward to last season. Stephen Hunt away v Chelsea. First goal of the season anywhere in England.
Good - The win against Fulham was awesome, 3 points in the Premier League Bad - The 2-3 defeat at home to Plymouth (promotion season) was grim. Didn't promise much at that point...
Good bloody call, though I think I went more nuts when Folan scored. Up until that point I genuinely wasn't convinced that we would actually win a Premiership game. What a day.
True i just chose that because it was such a good goal to announce ourselfs to the premier league we were there for business
Memories for me 2002-03- Future City legends Stuart Elliott and Ian Ashbee start their Tigers careers and Elliott scores on his debut for City at BP in a 2-2 draw v Southend. The other one was scored by Stuart Green who later went on to play a bit of how's your father with the Gaffa's daughter. 2003-04- Our first full year at KC and everyone was desperate for City to finally get out of the bottom division, which they did with style. The 4-1 demolition of Darlo, set the bad memories of their scabby win at the last game at Boothferry Park to rest. Even Alton Unwell scored. 2005-06- An uneventful match against QPR, in our first season in the championship, was made all the more interesting by supposed chants about the London Bombings of that summer coming from the City crowd. The Drama Queens felt that they were being taunted and began to kick off and went onto blubber to everyone and bad mouth City. Worst start- Plymouth at home. We started well but allowed them to boss the game and we lost. However, the losing to Plymouth Argyle on the opening day myth proved itself right, as by the end of they year we were partying in the streets around Wembley.
I really thought Thelwell was a fantastic signing after that game and that he would go on to do great things in a city shirt. Not for the first time, I was wrong.
