Premier League footballer Nile Ranger has been arrested after a man was left unconscious with a suspected broken jaw in an attack.

The 33-year-old victim was found outside Cosy Joes Pub, in the Groat Market in Newcastle, after police were called in the early hours.

Mr Ranger, 20, was later arrested on suspicion of assault.

Newcastle United refused to comment, but a source confirmed the striker had been arrested.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "The injured man was unconscious and was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary suffering from a suspected broken jaw.

"The offender made off and police carried out a search of the area.

"A 20-year-old man was arrested a short time later, nearby, on suspicion of assault and is currently helping police with their enquiries.

"Police are appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time who may have seen or heard anything suspicious to contact them."

Mr Ranger, from London, moved to Newcastle in July 2008 following his release by Southampton.

Will it be a slap on the wrists for another footballer...

Where he'll get another club to pay him several thousand a week, nothing ever changes in the mad world of football.

    I know.

Everyone at Newcastle hates him. He's lazy and doesn't quite appreciate what kind of chance we've given him.

It wasn't that long ago that he was participating in armed bank robberies in London.

He'll be one of those that slides down the leagues and out of the game before he's 30.

When you look at it coldly, he hasn't even got the potential to be a Premier League player, he's clumsy, he's lazy, and he is simply not good enough.

****e player. Unable to get ONE goal and now he's been dumped out of the first team entirely without even a look-in. Getting arrested like this has just set himself up to be kicked out of Newcastle United ASAP. Ashley has learned his lesson over Barton and will not tolerate crap like that anymore.

Personally don't give a balls if he does go. We need all of the thugs out of this club sooner rather than later. At least with Barton and Ranger out, we're left with a relatively nice bunch of lads.

At least Barton could play, this lad offers nowt, aside from the aforementioned potential looting skills.

You know what I meant Syd...

    BruceysBeak

    Exactly.

Can't see him improving as a player and doesn't show the desire to improve as a player.

    His loss.
