Imagine the scenario...New fifa regulations say that from the 2015 season, every town / city must only have one professional football team. I think the final league table would look something like this. 1 Manchester 2 London 3 Liverpool 4 Sunderland 5 Birmingham 6 Stoke 7 Bolton 8 Leeds 9 Blackburn 10 Wolverhampton 11 Nottingham 12 West Bromwich 13 Wigan 14 Derby 15 Norwich 16 Cardiff 17 Sheffield 18 Coventry 19 Newcastle 20 Leicester
Could it be changed so it is only cities with cathedrals? Also Wigan/Bolton/Blackburn aren't cities, nor is West Bromich both are townships (Manchester and Birmingham respectively) On phone so excuse the edit. Second edit - which London do you mean since it has two and also London isn't a city itself it's a town.
exactly the same as the fairs cup then, had to have a trade fair, and only 1 team from each city/town could enter and btw Newcastle won that.
Sorry. You could make a league up of cities in England. Reading, Lincoln,Bath, York, plus two London teams (strange you have to capitalize it but other towns its not needed) would fill the gap but sadly if it was cathedrals only Sunderland would be missing.
Sunderland has a Minster which is another old religeous qualification for City status (like York minster for example). Newcastle's 'Cathedral' is actually a parish church that was given Cathedral status in 1882 to allow Newcastle to become a city and is, strictly speaking a Pro-Cathedral not a Cathedral. I'm afraid that jibe quite misses the mark. Better luck next time.
When the Fairs cup started - you know the one - the invitational non-qualifying piece of metal the Toon won to make them overlords of the known football world - London actually had a team in it. Early 60's or even late 50's, am not sure. I had a book somewhere that had the team in it. Can't remember who was there, but I think a young Jimmy Greaves was one of them. Got beat in the semis if I remember rightly. x
it was a London XI team. Final London XI 2-2 CF Barcelona – March 3, 1958 at Stamford Bridge Team: Jack Kelsey (Ars), Peter Sillett (Che), Jim Langley (Ful), Danny Blanchflower (Tot), Maurice Norman (Tot), Ken Coote (Bre), Vic Groves (Ars), Jimmy Greaves (Che), Bobby Smith (Tot), Johnny Haynes (Ful), George Robb (Tot). Scorers: Greaves 10', Langley (pen) 88'. CF Barcelona 6-0 London XI – May 1, 1958 Team: Jack Kelsey (Ars), George Wright (Ley), Noel Cantwell (Wes), Danny Blanchflower (Tot), Ken Brown (Wes), Dave Bowen (Ars), Terry Medwin (Tot), Vic Groves (Ars), Bobby Smith (Tot), Jimmy Bloomfield (Ars), Jim Lewis (Che) CF Barcelona won 8-2 on aggregate Key Ars – Arsenal ; Bre – Brentford ; Cha – Charlton Athletic ; Che – Chelsea ; Cry – Crystal Palace ; Ful – Fulham ; Ley – Leyton Orient ; Mil – Millwall ; QPR – Queens Park Rangers ; Tot – Tottenham Hotspur ; Wes – West Ham United
Blackcat. The speed of your response makes me think you were DYING for someone to ask! LOL. Have a rep. x
lol not particularly, just very fast at googling English teams (apart from the london XI) were only allowed to enter in 66-67 Leeds got to the final, got beat Leeds Won it Newcastle won it Arsenal Won it Leeds won it it was then scrapped for the Uefa Cup UEFA Cup The 1971–72 season saw the competition taken over by UEFA and relaunched as the UEFA Cup. By replacing the trophy, renaming the competition, and revising the entry regulations, UEFA effectively ended the Fairs Cup. Among the changes was the abandonment of the "one city one team" rule, which had had a particularly bad effect on English entrants for 1969–70, when Liverpool (2nd), Arsenal (4th), Southampton (7th), and Newcastle United (9th) got the places, at the expense of Everton (3rd), Chelsea (5th), Tottenham Hotspur (6th), and West Ham United (8th). The rule was dropped in 1975, when Everton, having come 4th, would have been excluded thanks to Liverpool's 2nd-place finish. Their protest that the rule was an anachronism was upheld.
