In the recent PL or Championship thread, quite a few argued for the Championship for excitement; now that's fine, of course, but when you add that to an argument against the FA Cup there seems to be some double standards. Perhaps the posters who would field a **** team for the Cups, yet prefer not to be promoted could enlighten us to their logic?
I dont think anyone was saying they didnt want to be promoted. I for one said the Championship and I do want us to field **** cup teams and concentrate on the league so we do go up. I want us to go to the PL for the respect, we will play on TV, it will help the club financially, help the city etc. Week in and week out the Championship is more exciting for me because I dont go into every game routing for us to get a draw like I did when we were in the PL. Doesnt mean I dont want us to go up.
I must have missed that thread, which is a shame because i would have been able to say this... Although the championship is by far the most enjoyable competition,we have to want top flight football. If we don't want to be promoted, then we are not competing,if we're not competing,we're not even a sport. Call this an uncomfortable truth if you like.
I find this whole debate daft.. to be pretty successful in the championship chances are you'll end up promoted anyway.. maybe if promotion didnt exist.. unless we want to become a derby/Milwall where midtable obscurity is every season.. i can't see too much excitement from that.. onwards and upwards!
I didn't create the thread with the argument that I wouldn't want us to go up. Just for the excitement we would feel as a club from being in the championship. Nothing is more enjoyable than winning, surely?
It's fine getting in the premier league, but we won't compete when we're there unless we piss endless amounts of money away. Money we haven't got. Ellewoods talks sense- most of the time we'll be hoping to nick something. And that won't come about every week, so we'll be most likely beaten. Whereas, in the championship you go into every game knowing you have a chance. That isn't enjoyable at all.
So what would you suggest we do ? This is important now...do we throw games we could win ? Or maybe take the easy route and get Mclean back.
I certainly got a buzz out of some of our games in our first season in the PL and not just the ones that we won. Coming back from 4-1 down at Old Trafford to scare the pants off them when we got it to 4-3 for example. It's no fun getting tonked every week but it is fun mixing it with the big boys and occasionally giving them a bloody nose! I'd be happy with survival if we continued to play the right way and didn't get stuffed too regularly. As long as the players give it their all and don't capitulate, you can't really ask for much more.
That was my point, if we play well, we will eventually hit the premiership. But I would miss the championship.
We play our hearts out and try to win every game. Its sports and you dont want your team to lose and you want to be the best there is. The original question was what league is more exciting. For me its this one with the caveat that it is this one right now. I still want us to go up and hopefully we can stay up or yo-yo and then stay up. Eventually being the type of team that has a chance to win every game in the PL like we do in the championship. I approached the original question in the short term. If we do go up we just have to do a better job of who we sign, how much they sign for, etc. That way we have the best chance we can at being the type of team that can be a main stay in the PL. I would not risk the financial well being of the club like we did last time for the chance at staying up.
This was the original question: Which league would you rather watch City play in? This is obviously removing the financial benefits of being promoted and being able to watch the highlights an hour earlier. I like the unpredictability and competitiveness of the championship, but the chance to see the worlds best players is a plus. Whats your thoughts? Just wondering if i am alone in thinking this? The emphasis on excitement came from some of the posts, but not all. It was - Premiership vs Championship - on page 2. (It's a quiet period on the board, so why not discuss?) I wonder if it is the excitement or simply the need to win regularly. Everton have won nothing in ten years under Moyes, but they have had excitement in their wins and losses Don't you believe that is worthwhile? Isn't the FA and League cup a worthwhile target? Swansea are in Europe, how would that tickle your ambition? But I am still interested why some can have no ambition for promotion and no ambition for a cup run. What is the point of supporting a professional football team?
Yes it is a worthwhile target. Yea Europe would be a good target for sure. No idea. For me it is just the order of them that I have the ambition for.
It's not a definate that we would come straight back down. Teams can compete & have proved it, as I said in the other thread, Stoke, West Brom & Swansea to name a few.
