It is not often great trainers retire (because there's not that many) but yesterday saw the announcement for one of those greats. After more than 50 years as a trainer in the UK he has decided to hang up his binoculars. I first noticed him in 1972 when he won a few small races. I took note 2 years later when his colt Blue Cashmere won the Nunthorpe at York. From then on he built up slowly but steadily reaching the top very early in 1981 with Shergar. He stayed at that level for the next 40 years.. To my mind he was one of the best trainers of the last 50 years.
