I have ummed and arghhed over whether to publish this and decided to go ahead as i honestly do not see it as doing any harm and i hope the individual concerned does not take offence as it made me very happy and honoured to read it!! What i will say is if RON wants to take it down and wait for the 'legend' to give his approval i do not mind at all. Here are some comments referring to our main man who shall be referred to as LT If London was THE place to be in the sixties then Chelsea was THE team to play for. The Kings Road in those days was a vibrant colourful 'happening' place full of mini-skirts, shoulder length hair, beads and kaftans - and that was just the men LOL what a start!! Manager Tommy Docherty (TD) was a brash young man who boasted a highly talented squad of exciting young players including a certain 18 year old LT who was a tough tackling, ball winner. LT was thrown in at the deep end in a League Cup semi-final and after playing very well scored a spectacular 30 yard screamer to win the tie! What a start. He went on to play against all the top teams in those days in England and also Europe. Quotes: Within a week the young lad had played within all three major domestic competitions but not yet at home! Played in 9 games for the Blues before he tasted defeat! At one stage he played in 6 games within 12 days, how many modern day players could do that!! Some of the star quality that LT faced and played alongside included: Uwe Seeler, Franz Beckenbauer, George Graham, Peter Bonetti, Alan Hudson, Peter Osgood (best mate), George Best, Dave Webb, Chopper Harris, John Hollins, Dave Webb, Jimmy Greaves, Martin Peters, Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Terry Venables. (too many more to mention!!) During a game he was once hit on the back of the head by a bottle and knocked unconscious! After this game their coach was also bricked causing a window to break and glass shards go everywhere!! Aged just 20 he had already won more than 100 senior appearances, awesome going. He also had the pleasure of playing the game he loved so much under such characters as TD and Dave Sexton. I really hope some of you enjoy reading this as it made me smile and i really cannot wait to meet the man when we go racing at Sandown Park later in the year
GDC, I don't have a problem with this 'off-topic' Article. Whether it embarrasses LT is another matter. Having said that, it's good to give praise where praise is due, and LT was certainly one very good footballer! What I do I have a problem with is all these SOUTHERN players he 'faced and played alongside.' (Exception: George Best- you must be a Man Utd supporter!) There were one or two good NORTHERN players and teams in the sixties, weren't there? Therefore, GDC, I'm only giving you 4 stars for your cheek!
Tam: Very good, in those days the Northerners were kept 'locked up' North only the Jocks were allowed down South Cheers
wonderful, Mr Pannini should be embarrassed, its not everyday you get to play the game you love at such a brilliant level. Shame he can't tip a winner mind
GDC, yeah, you're right about the Northerners being "locked up North." Many of them probably lacked ambition; or saw London as a foreign country; or simply couldn't afford that rip-off metropolis! As for the Jocks, they got everywhere. The ones who kept sober(for a while) might have made it to London, but most of them were too p-ssed to go any further once they reached Lancashire.
I remember Joe Jordan going to AC Milan - no idea when it was though. Didn't they buy Luther Blisset as well ???
Didn't realise Osgood was a best mate. He was always a very very good footballer but before he broke his leg ('65 or '66) he was truly outstanding. Just amazing, I loved seeing him play. Jocks!!!? Pity they don't like to live in their own country. Oooops sorry LT.
Am I the only one to have no idea what this is about or who LT is? And I'm a footy fan of an age where I saw all these guys play!
Well, well. I've wondered about all this talk of LT's football career. It's amazing to think that a man as well mannered and courteous as LT is, was once a take no prisoners type of player. And at the top level as well. Ya' just never know, do ya'? Onya mate. P.S. Thanks Gaz.
CC? Come on Reebok, one doesn't have to be Sherlock Holmes to work that one out. Long before this thread went up it was a simple task to work out who LT was, just from the info LT provided on his posts. Hangman anyone?
I must say that was a little before my era but i still know the teams and i have no idea, even your cc guess has left me flumoxed Reebok.
