DEFENDER Harry Maguire has told how Bristol City's quest to sign him last summer helped him realise he still had a future at Hull. Newly-promoted from League One and looking to bolster their squad, the Robins tabled an undisclosed bid for the former Sheffield United centre-back in June. But Tigers manager Steve Bruce refused to countenance selling Maguire and City were forced to switch their search elsewhere. Speaking ahead of tomorrow's Sky-televised showdown at Ashton Gate, Maguire recalled: "I think they put a couple of bids in but the gaffer turned them down. It didn't really go any further than that. "That gave me reassurance. After the difficulties of the first season, I was coming through the summer wondering if I'm still in the manager's plans. "When you see Bristol (City) put in a bid and the gaffer rejects it straight away, I knew he wanted me here and that he trusts me. That gave me a big confidence boost ahead of the new season. "Everyone likes a little bit of reassurance now and then. I'm sure the gaffer would have sat me down, he's like that, so credit to him." Hull are the form team in the Championship right now, but Maguire expects a tough contest at Ashton Gate. He added: "Bristol City are a good, strong side. Anyone who wins the league like they did is a good side. I've played in League One for a lot of years and it's a tough league to get out of. "You don't get any easy games so to romp the league like they did and win the cup (JPT) you know they've got a lot of good players. "But with the form we're in at the minute, we'll be looking to go there and get the maximum points." http://www.bristolpost.co.uk/BRISTO...aguire-opens/story-28206864-detail/story.html
Makes you realise there was a lot of activity pre - season but we somehow missed out on a hell of a lot of players..
This is the guy that we offered a certain amount for and in principle a deal was agreed by the clubs, then when SC was away on holiday a clever clog went in and offered less. Steve Bruce told him in no uncertain terms to go away and the deal was dead. Probably the guy that got the sack.
I think Hull are is it £77m in debt so may be one day they will be forced to sell. Nothing is forever and perhaps our current financial prudence means tat one day our day will come.
