Hi guys, this post doesn't revolve football but it is about someone who lives in Hull and an important matter that could affect anyone of you. My friend commited sucide by jumping of the Humber bridge on Wednesday night and all it would take is some suicide bars to save her. Beth was a real fighter and this shows how anyone can give up no matter how strong you are. Imagine if it was one of your loved ones maybe your daughter or wife. A petition has been made to make the council put up suicide bars on the bridge. We need 2,000 people to sign it before they do it and so far we've got 1,800. I was only talking about this at work today. Been too many people just lately, a terrible tragedy it definitely needs doing.
i wouldn't call them suicide barriers but i do think the barriers should be higher full stop, i won't walk across the thing tragic loss
I don't want to sound insensitive and I know it really is sad but I don't get how barriers are the solution? It's not like people are falling off it by accident. If people are so severely depressed that they want to jump off a bridge then will barriers really help? Won't they just go somewhere else? Surely helping them a bit earlier is more important?
depends i spose, no one knows the mindset, jumping off the bridge is an easy way to die than jumping infront of a train but raise the barriers anyway, too low, i dont want to walk that high up and have that much of a fall t'other side then again, san franciso golden gate bridge doesnt have high barriers, and that's the most popular suicide spot in the world.. perhaps popular isin't the word
The Humber Bridge is the worlds 9th most popular(if that's the right word) suicide spot. Suicide barriers work and if you remove what is perceived to be an easy option for people wanting to commit suicide, they apparently don't tend to try and find another way.
They have them at Valley Bridge, Scarborough as most will know. I doubt many have jumped since the bars were put up but you do wonder if it has reduced the suicide rate overall. I think there is a certain attraction about a bridge after all a jump from a multi storey car is almost as dangerous. They are putting up nets on the Golden Gate bridge at a cost of $76 million. Money of that amount could do a lot of counselling. I was sorry to read about the death of the OP's friend.
RIP Beth such a tragic loss of life at such a young age. I can't imagine what drives a 16 year old to make a decision like this? At 16, all I was worried about was girls and football. A really sad loss.
Suicide bars work at least the studies they have been talking about here indicate so. They are putting them up on the Golden Gate Bridge and go over the studies once in a while. It doesnt stop everyone from committing suicide clearly but it does stop some people by eliminate the availability of it and also by eliminating the hot spots that draw people in.
Wouldn't it be cheaper and more cost effective to have Phil Brown patrol the streets and the bridge? Signed also.
We have really poor mental health facilities and programs in the US. Its why something like 60% of our prison inmates have mental health issues instead of being treated in mental health facilities. We are really famous here for not addressing mental health issues and we have only just recently admitted that PSD exists in military veterans and have begun programs to address it (very unsuccessfully at this point). Things like the bridge bar as well as actual programs like counselling and a real commitment to treat mental illness in this country would go a long ways. Its just that there is no movement to get funding for one but it is possible to get funding for things like the bridge bars. Its not like Cali doesnt have the money if the powers that be really cared, definitely not a we only have money for one kind of thing. I also signed the petition.
Thing is, not all people are decided. These people are facing their own death, they're weighing up their options. A deterrent can make the difference between someone jumping or not. Agree 100% they should be helped earlier but it's easier said than done. Mental health is seriously underfunded and misunderstood. Some people spend years seeking help and never get it.
I just googled the number of deaths at Golden Gate and it's 1200 since 1937. That's 1200 tragedies but last year in the US 20,000 killed themselves by guns.
