On New Years Day 1919 the Royal Navy Yacht Iolaire was ferrying sailors returning from The Great War back home to the Isle of Lewis. It was pressed into action when more men than the normal ferry could take turned up at Kyle of Lochalsh on the mainland.
Lewis had already lost nearly 1,000 men in the war, a huge proportion of its male population. The Iolaire struck rocks in high seas after a minor navigational error and sank with 200 men killed just 20 yards from the shoreline. About 40 survived.
There was a memorial torch parade in Stornaway last night in honour of the dead.
