We agreed a fee of 80 million pounds for Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid, he looks like a bargain now considering what people were saying at the time.
On this day in 2009 I was worried ****less because my wedding was in 3 weeks and I was worried my dad wouldnt live long enough to make it to my big day. (He was taken into hospital the morning of my wedding so missed it by 6 hours, then died the following morning, was great going on my honeymoon with that hanging over me )
Oh **** that's depressing. Re: Ronaldo. I just remember everyone saying £80m was about right for the best footballer in the world going to one of the richest clubs in the world.
This should have been the start of rebuilding a strong team, with £80m available to buy some really top players, especially midfielders. Instead the Greedy Gs used the money for paying interest and debt and the team had to make do with the likes of Giggs and Scholes extending their careers. The 2008 was the pinnacle and the side has been getting worse since.
On a far less depressing note, Giggs, to be fair, has put in some awesome performances for you since 2008. From 2011 onward he had a major dip, but up until 2010.# Even though Im a Chelsea fan, Giggs is still , imo, the best player to ever play in the Premier league. Guy was a frickin beast in his prime, circa 97-2001. That goal against Arsenal in the 99 Fa cup semi as well (the shirt twirler).
Money well ****ing spent. Especially obertan. Didn't we make a profit on him selling him to the Geordies?
Don't think 80 million could ever be seen as a 'bargian'. but he has lived up to the price tag to be fair. Pirlo on a free was a bargain.
Giggs most decorated player in a high quality era of domestic (Chelsea Arsenal City) and European football (strong Milan, Juve, Barca, Real). Phil Neal and Dalglish hoarded medals in the weakest domestic era (only Everton and Forest were briefly dominating) and poorest European era (opponents such as Odense, Brugges, Panathaniokos, Dinamo, weak Italian and Spanish leagues)
That's such bollox, you can't say they were poor opposition then just because they would be considered that now. Just for the record Giggs was a ****ing brilliant player in his prime.
Very valid point. 15 years ago if anyone said that in 2014 Chelsea and City would be competing for the title in 2014, people would assume it meant 2014 would have to be least competitive season ever.
You wouldn't have replaced those two in 2099. Also how insulting to say 'had to make do with the likes of'. They were still putting in performances of the highest level.
Surely £80million is a bargain when you consider he has paid that back tenfold in sponsorship and shirt sales etc.
