please log in to view this image Swansea City host Tottenham Hotspur at the Liberty Stadium on Sunday 19th January (KO 13:30) in the 22nd round of matches in the 2013-14 Premier League season. Swansea come into the game in 13th place on 21 points with Spurs in 5th place on 40 points. This will be the 43rd time the two teams have met. Swansea City were founded in 1912 as Swansea Town (they changed their name to Swansea City in 1969) and joined the Second Division of the Southern League for the 1913-14 season. After World War One, The Jacks became members of the SL First Division and joined the Football League in season 1920-21 when the Southern League was incorporated to form the Third Division of the Football League. The following season the division was re-named the Third Division South. The first meeting between Spurs and Swansea came in the Second Division in November 1928 at Vetch Field with the home side winning 4-0. The reverse fixture in March 1929 at White Hart Lane ended in a 1-1 draw. The clubs met for a further eight seasons in Division Two between seasons 1930-31 and 1938-39 with 10 wins for Spurs, 2 wins for Swansea and 4 matches drawn. During the Second World War, the clubs played two games in the Football League South with a win each. The clubs played for two more seasons in Division Two after WW2 with three wins for Spurs and one for Swansea. Spurs and Swansea have played five games in the Football League Cup, the first of which came in the second round in September 1970 with Tottenham winning 3-0 at the Lane with goals from Steve Perryman, Martin Peters and Roger Morgan. Eight years later, Swansea drew with Spurs 2-2 at Vetch Field in the second round first leg and won 3-1 at White Hart Lane. The most recent League Cup meetings came in the second round in 1991 with Swansea winning 1-0 at home in the first leg and Spurs winning 5-1 at White Hart Lane with goals from Paul Stewart, Vinnie Samways, Gary Lineker, Paul Allen and an own goal. Swansea City won promotion to the Top Flight of English Football for the first time in season 1981-82 and were league leaders at one stage before finishing in 6th position. The match at Vetch Field in September 1981 resulted in a 2-1 win for The Swans with Glenn Hoddle scoring for Spurs, while the return match at the Lane in May 1982 was won 2-1 by Spurs with Gary Brooke scoring both goals. A similar set of results came in Swansea's second season in Division One with a 2-0 home win in Swansea and a 1-0 home win in Tottenham. The two clubs came in a friendly played in Swansea in November 1992, which resulted in a 3-3 draw. Tottenham Hotspur and Swansea City have never met in the FA Cup. Swansea became the first Welsh club to play in the Premier League by winning the play-off against Reading at Wembley 4-2 thanks mainly to a Scott Sinclair hat-trick. The fixture at the Liberty Stadium in December 2011 finished in a 1-1 draw with Spurs going ahead just before half-time through Rafael van der Vaart but Swansea salvaged a point with a late equaliser from Scott Sinclair. Rafael van der Vaart put Spurs 1-0 up at halftime in the match at White Hart Lane in April 2012 with a 19th minute goal. Sigurdsson equalised for Swansea in the 59th minute but a brace from Emmanuel Adebayor secured the three points for Spurs. During the 2012 summer Tottenham Hotspur signed Icelandic midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson from 1899 Hoffenheim but who had been on loan at Swansea City for the 2011-12 season. The game at White Hart Lane in December 2012 was won by a Jan Vertonghen goal scored in the 75th minute. Swansea won the first major trophy in their history in February 2013 when they beat Bradford City in the Football League Cup Final 5-0. The game at Liberty Stadium at the end of March 2013 was won 2-1 by Spurs. Jan Vertonghen put Spurs ahead after 7 minutes and Gareth Bale added a second on 21 minutes. Swansea pulled a goal back through Miguel Michu on 71 minutes. Tottenham won their opening home game of the 2013-14 season in August beating Swansea 1-0 thanks to a 28th minute Roberto Soldado penalty after Jonjo Shelvey had fouled Andros Townsend. It would be very nice to head to Manchester City with five wins and a draw under our belt since Tim Sherwood took charge. Swansea have just the two points from their last six PL matches, so it's not unreasonable to hope for a Spurs win next Sunday.
Swansea are struggling for results at the moment, cup win at Old Trafford aside, so it's important that we take advantage of this and don't capitulate. Their possession football is bound to frustrate us at points, so we need to be better prepared for them than we were for Palace in the first half yesterday. They've got a few goalscorers in their side, so they won't let us off the hook like Pulis' side did. Any news on Walker's injury?
They've been playing really well though. Their game against City was probably the best match of the season, certainly in terms of quality of football and they did well in the first half against United too. It's all about whether they find their clinical edge though and if they don't on Sunday then there isn't really any excuses for not beating them. I wouldn't be surprised if they play really well next week though and I think this could turn out to be our first loss in the league under Sherwood.
Vertonghen has Tweeted this: "Another 3 point yesterday!!! Well done! Hopefully last couple of days in my recovery next week!" It would be nice to see him back. Kaboul's been training too, but I'm less convinced by his overall fitness.
Yeah, Chiriches is a bit of a nightmare sometimes, it'll be great to have Jan back to give us some options in defence again.
Laudrup mentioned after the game against us they face a run of games which will define their season in either pushing away from relegation or being dragged into the battle. ''after the Spurs games we have to pick up points '' Either good man management in challenging his players to prove him wrong against us or he has virtually written the game off in the bigger picture. I'm edging towards a draw as Sherwoods honeymoon period is coming to an end and I'm expecting some poor results while he gets to grip with management.
Although it will be difficult for Sherwood to improve on the 13 points from 15 he has achieved so far, I expect that we will be even stronger in the coming weeks with so many of our players coming back from injuries. Neither of our two first choice central defenders have played under Sherwood yet, nor have Sandro or Townsend.
Most managers (when they take over mid season) have that classic honeymoon period where they top the form table. Sherwood has had that rub of tthe green and deservedly IMO as I like his management style but I'm expecting a drop In form even with returning players. Swansea have their own troubles so this match could see us still win but Swansea have been playing well but not picking up points while we have been getting luck so I won't be surprised at a reversal of fortune.
Can not see us winning this ... while swansea have not won in a while they have played very well in that time...if they play well they will win imo
Swansea will be a tough one. They're capable of causing any side a problem and Bony tends to be settling fairly well and will be a handful for our back line fi he's up for it. Think we could do with an extra man in midfield for this trip, I'd give Lamela a go if he's fully fit. Lloris, Walker, Dawson, Chiriches, Rose Dembele, Bentaleb Lennon, Eriksen, Lamela Ade
Gotta feeling he's on his way out HBIC. Sherwood doesn't seem to rate him despite the fact I thought he looked bloody good in the games he's played at CM. Spurcat mentioned he was late for arrival at the hotel for Soton hence why he never played then but as for his absences since, I presume he's out of favour.
The thing is that, as I've said several times before, Sherwood sitting him on the naughty step is having an adverse effect on results - it cost us two points against West Brom because we didn't have control on midfield at any point, it's part of the reason we were overrun in midfield in the FA Cup (lining up 442 didn't help, either) and Palace's toothless attacking play is the main reason we kept a clean sheet at the weekend. The fact is that, with Sandro out, we need a destroyer in midfield and neither Dembele or Bentaleb are that player.
So do I. If we don't pick either Capoue or Sandro against Swansea, then we'll basically surrender the bulk of possession to them and be trying to hit them on the break. If they were to take the lead under those circumstances, then I'm not sure how we'd get back into the game, barring stupid defensive errors. I'd consider shifting Dembele out onto the left and switching to a 4-4-1-1 for this one, dropping the lackluster Soldado to the bench and playing Eriksen behind Adebayor. Can't see Sherwood mixing things up too much, though.
Slightly off topic, but posted here to try to catch THFC6061's attention The Chelsea/Arsenal boards are enjoying posting a table of Prem League London derbys (they call it All time - but only since 1992) which, obviously shows them well ahead of us in 3rd. I wonder if a table going back over real All time would show a very different story. Question therefore to THFC - does your database have this info?
