The above named is an 18-year old American striker who is apparently having a trial with us. He has also trained with Everton in the past.

Does anyone know anything about him? All I can glean is that his senior goalscoring record isn't prolific (which doesn't necessarily mean anything at his age) and that he was the number 1 pick in the MLS draft in 2011 (which means he's seen as a hot prospect by the American teams).

He's tall - 6 '4" and plays for the newly created MLS team in Vancouver, B.C. Not a huge scoring record, but new teams frequently fail to score many goals. He's an international, having played for both Mexico and USA in various "U" tournaments.

It's the season when American prospects make their tour of UK clubs since the MLS has wrapped up its season. All of these people are on trial:

    Juan Agudelo – VfB Stuttgart
    Kyle Beckerman – Kaiserslautern
Bill Hamid – West Bromwich Albion
    Sean Johnson – Manchester United
    Perry Kitchen – SC Freiburg
    Jeff Larentowicz – Bolton Wanderers
    Robbie Rogers – Kaiserslautern
    Omar Salgado – Fulham
    Brek Shea – Arsenal

Brek Shea, a very talented US defender, is the one I'd be betting on - 6'3", left footed, fast, technical and soooo calm on the ball. I saw him play a few years ago in the Toulon, France, tournament as a U17 where he stood out like a man amongst boys. Omar Salgado was in that tourmament, too, but didn't make much of an impression.

    Good infor, DR. Many thanks.

Robbie Rogers sounds like the secret identity of a Marvel superhero. We should sign him. Perry Kitchen sounds like an interior design catalogue - not so good.

There's no accounting for taste in names. My son, Quazi-MotoGP, were just talking about that.

But seriously, American players do have some funny old names.

Bidley and Captain, I won't argue with you about the names, though "Rogers" has not special meaning in the States. Plenty of Americans also have the first name "Randy" as well. And in the same way, while the name "Steve" means nothing special in the UK, in the states ... well, let's not talk about that.

Actually, that reminds me of a joke:

Grasshopper walks into a bar. When the bartender looks up, he says, "Hey, I've got a drink named after you."
"Really," the grasshopper replies, "you've got a drink names 'Steve?'"

Was Salgado the mystery trialist who scored in this afternoon's 1-1 draw for the reserves against Crystal Palace ?
