With the news today that Peter Norman, the forgotten third athlete who took part in the Black power salute in the 1968 Mexico City olympics, is to receive a posthumous apology from the Australian Government, I got to thinking of the most iconic memories of previous games. There's loads - Muhammad Ali lighting the flame in Atlanta, Coe and Ovett, Jesse owens blowing out Hitler's lucky 15 in Berlin, Steve Redgrave's 5 golds, British athletes singing what's it like to lose a war at their Geramn opponenets in londion in 1948, Mark Spitz winning 7 golds, Presidents Brezhnev and Sadat sharing a light hearted chuckle following the deaths of a number of Israeli athletes at the 1972 Olympiad in Munich, Nadia Comenic's pefect 10s, Eric Idle dancing with roller skating nuns in London - the list is endless. My personal favourite was mary decker trying to take Zola budd off the track in Los Angeles and ending up on the deck herself. What are the forum's favourite moments?
Allan Wells winning 100m gold in 1980. Will we ever see a white man (and in his case seriously white!) repeat the feat?
Anthony Neste of Surinam won a gold medal in swimming at the 1988 Seoul olympics. I believe he's the only black male swimmer to have won an individual gold though might be wrong. A french girl won one tghis year as well. Few and far between though.
The great Mary Peters who left lipstick on both ears with her smile in 72. http://www.toptenz.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/mary-peters.jpg
Who could ever forget the great Mike Bull, charging at the pole, all guns a blazing. I could never remember was it the pole vault or the high jump ????
