Swansea City midfielder Ollie Cooper has put pen to paper on a new contract that will keep him at the club until at least the summer of 2027

The 22-year-old has enjoyed an outstanding breakthrough at Championship level this term, and his form – which has seen him mentioned as a candidate for the Wales World Cup squad – has been rewarded.

Cooper’s previous deal had been due to expire at the end of the season – although it did include an option for an additional year – but the club has moved to secure his future for the longer term.

The playmaker first joined the Swans at under-12 level, and he was a regular fixture for the under-23s during the 2018-19 and 2019-20 campaigns, netting a memorable hat-trick in the Premier League International Cup victory over former champions Porto.

He made his first-team debut as a substitute in the FA Cup win over Stevenage in January 2021, and then scored his first senior goal for the club in the victory over Nottingham Forest in the same competition.

Cooper spent the 2021-22 campaign on loan at Newport County, racking up nine assists and a goal from 35 appearances in all competitions.

His progress at Rodney Parade was closely monitored by head coach Russell Martin and his coaching staff, and the midfielder has scored three goals and contributed one assist in 13 appearances so far this term.

That trio of goals has come in Cooper’s last three home games against Sunderland, Reading and Cardiff.

"Ollie is a pleasure to work with and he is an absolutely fantastic person," said head coach Martin.

"He works so hard, and he has developed so much as a character and a player.

"Ever since he came into the side against Middlesbrough he has just got better and better.

"It has always been Ollie's dream to play here and we are really pleased to see him get his new contract.

"He absolutely deserves it and he is part of the long-term plan here and hopefully now there are a couple of other players who can get similar rewards and be part of this project for a long time to come."

Excellent to tie him into a long term contract. Decent transfer fee then when the yanks decide to sell him.

That was my first thought as well …. Sad isn’t it :steam:

That said, every club is a selling club if the price is right …. <ok>

It is sad to think like this, but as you say we are a selling club in the end. Only way to hold onto them is promotion back to the PL.

That’s when I think that the Yanks will bail out - it’s the only time in the near future when they would get their money back.

Not only relegation but the exchange rate has gone against them <cheers>

Credit to our Academy program, hope he goes on to achieve great things, Wales can always do with a bigger pool of talent, though we are doing rather well with the depth of the Welsh squad of late, all very positive side of the club, though I would like to see Academy one status return sooner than later....<cheers>

Or perhaps the player decides he would like to progress his career elsewhere.

All Club's are selling Club's. Just as they are all buying Club's. It's the nature of the business.

Promotion back to the PL doesn't automatically mean players don't get sold. If a player is that good, some of the big boys will soon be sniffing around.
