Just reading this item on City collecting old football boots for re-distribution for good causes,a great idea by the way...http://www.bcfc.co.uk/news/article/121012-communityboots-419630.aspx?pageView=full It made me think about the first pair of modern, senior boots I purchased,I went and had a look in the old cupboard and there they were,45 years old plus and still looking good and made me start to daydream,oh those days... My original boots were ankle wrappers, made from pure leather, well dubbed with hardened toe-caps and we put our own studs in,then came black and white continental light-weight boots, low slung, special studs and they really changed our approach to the game. Mine came from a shoe shop in Broadmead called Olivers,I earned £6-00 per week and these cost me £1-50 pence, they were called 'Continentals' and I attained the high status of playing in the 'Downs League' on Wednesday afternoons for 'Parkers Bakery' and having a great time with my mates allthough I didn't work for them. I've cleaned 'em up,the original mud was still on them, size 8's,they're looking good and they are going in the collection bucket to help the cause... Tell us your story about your old or favourite boots..
my fav boots have got to be my predators good old fashioned blades my mum got em second hand at work i was always having trouble with studs . i'll prob drop my old boots in for the hull game be good to see em get used again i do miss not using em so if someone else can get a good use out of them that's good enough for me
My first pair were a pair off Addidas "somethings"...traditional black with 3 white stripes, with the new revolutionary screw in aluminium studs.....complete with spanner! That was in 1979 and I played in the East Gwent League for Portskewett Park against the likes of the mighty Tintern, or Undy or local rivals Caldicot Labour club! I get out of breath putting me slippers on now, let alone boots!
I divorced my old boot.... back to the thread, Beckenbauer Specials bought from Norman Hunters shop!(served by Norman)
I remember your team, you were like Rovers everyone knew they could get some points of you My first pair were Gola's bought from Chepstow sport shop, moulded studs but I remember when I got my Addidas Beckenbauer. I was on fire for Garden City
I think my first pair were Gola's as well - moulded studs. I used to hate wearing new football boots, so mine used to be in pieces before I changed. I always wore black boots - At the end I had 2 pairs - one with normal studs (screw-in) and one with really small depth ones for when it was hard. All this fancy-dan coloured boots - think pro's need to achieve something in the game first - like when Alan Ball wore his white ones
My first pair was the old style over the ankle boot with very hard toecap and nail in studs. Not a problem as almost every household then had a metal shoe last to use when replacing worn ones. Those studs were lethal! The leather wore down quicker than the nails so if you got caught by studs, there were always two or three parallel gashes in your leg. First pair that even slightly resembled the modern low cut boot were "Stanley Matthews" brand from the Co-op which covered the protruding ankle bones but were still quite hard leather and toecaps, screw in studs and coloured grey. But the colour wore off over the years. Stan Matthews had a sponsorship deal with the Co-op in the early 1950's; they put his name on footall products and he in return did an autograph signing session on Saturday mornings in the Co-op nearest where Blackpool were playing in the afternoon. Dad, being from the Rhondda valley, used to take me to Cardiff City four or five times a season and we always went to see Blackpool in the hope that I would get Stan's autograph in the morning. But the queues were always too long and so I never got the prize I wanted. I did finally get the great man's autograph in the 90's at a Stoke v City FA Cup replay at the Victoria Ground. But as Cardiff were in the First Division, I did to see a lot of the top British internationals of the time. But even then my team was City and visits to Ashton Gate always meant more to me as they still do some 60 years later.
I cant remember my first pair of boots but they were probably some old Gola cheap ones for primary school, but the only boots that I bought that have held a memory for me are from 1994. I had come off a coupled of decent scoring return seasons and did my bollocks on a pair of newly designed (and much debated at the time) Adidas Predators, the ones created from an idea by Craig Johnstone. These boots were About £125 to buy at the time and that was unprecedented for local football. I got bundles from my mates for that and ended up stumbling over the 10 goal mark for the season in boots I was nowhere near good enough to use to their potential. They are still in my loft somewhere and I am hoping they may become collectors item one day, but it wont be because I wore them though, thats a fact...
My first ones were donated to me by a friend of the family. They were so old they didnt even have a brand on them. The first pair I bought myself were Patrick, with screw in studs and that was before the brand was widely known.
That's them! Where did you get my old boots from? Send em back immediately so I can have a last kick around before I become too old to remember how to do it. Now let me think - is it the instep or those deliciously big toe caps?
My first boots were gola boots with long metal studs got them from a 2nd hand shop, after that I had mor gola boots and Umbro ones. My first adult boots that I bought and picked we're puma reflex boots they had a flexi sole to make running better they were pre Adidas predator generation and there were lots of new style designs coming out like those cica boots with the triangle studs, they surprisingly lasted a while without breaking.
