Allegedly or according to the rumour machine of the time, Arthur Milton retired from football because no one at Bristol City had the sense to ask him to sign another contract for City. He thought they did not want him so he just concentrated on his cricket. As you said he was the last "double" international to play for England at football and cricket. Also Arsenal players of this era were brothers Denis and Leslie Compton. Both played top class cricket for Middlesex and football for Arsenal. Denis represented England at cricket and scored the winning runs at the Oval in 1953 when England reclaimedthe Ashes and also 12 times at football in wartime football internationals although these do not count as full internationals. Brother Leslie playedtwice at Football for England but never made the England cricket team. I still have Denis Compton's autograph in my book. As I've previously posted quite a few City and Rovers players in 50's and 60's played football in the winter and Glos cricket in the summer. As did many others for other Counties / League teams. And the great John Atyeo was probably good enough to have done this if he had not been a part-time footballer in the 50's with a job as a quantity surveyor. But unlikely this will ever happen again given the demands of both sports.
