Whats the bets that this happens to us. We get the all clear, TRASH and the NIMBYS cant stop us anymore but then this happens.... Sainsburyâs has caused shock waves in Wadebridge by calling a halt on building its new superstore in the town. Work started at the end of March on building the supermarket with a promise of 200 full and part-time jobs. A new filling station was also planned on the site at Higher Trenant and the superstore was destined to be open by Christmas. Sainsburyâs said today the Wadebridge store was one of a number it had decided not to build at this time. The retailer said it may be back on site sometime next year, but was reviewing its programme for building new stores. A Sainsburyâs spokesperson said: âWe can confirm that work on our planned Wadebridge store will not be completed this year. Over the coming weeks we will complete site work and make the area safe and secure. We recently announced a small reduction in the number of new stores to be built in 2014 and have with regret decided not to progress plans. We are hugely appreciative of the support we have received from the community and understand this will be disappointing to many people. We will be reviewing our programme of new stores for future years and hope to be able to make an announcement about our plans for Wadebridge in the coming months." Taken from the Cornish Gardian.
That's because Waitrose are moving into the area and Sainsbury's are wary of the competition in a tight market. I'm living down here at the moment so I hear all the gossip about these sorts of things. Truro City are also moving to a new stadium for Cornwall and Waitrose/John Lewis will be moving onto the old site... go tell the missus! Wouldn't worry about the Horfield store, it is a very different scenario...
This is the bits that worry me.... "We recently announced a small reduction in the number of new stores to be built in 2014 and have with regret decided not to progress plans" and "We will be reviewing our programme of new stores for future years"
