We need to be positive - Kilkenny

Midfielder ahead of the visit of Blackpool to Ashton Gate.
Neil Kilkenny has urged his fellow team mates to be positive as they look to put an end to the current bad run.

The midfielder has spent the majority of the season ruled out due to injury making just three starts so far this campaign.

City have lost their last seven npower Championship fixtures but the Australian international has recalled last season’s poor form to show just how quickly the team can climb the npower Championship table.

“Last season we were on a terrible run when the current manager took over. We went to Barnsley, picked up three points and went unbeaten for the next five games,” Kilkenny told Bristol City Player.

“Once we get that first win, I feel we are capable of doing recreating last season’s form. Once we put a few good results together we will soon climb the table and the confidence will begin to build. We have to be positive if we want to put an end to this run.

“We know Blackpool will be a tough test, they have done well in previous seasons by being a good footballing side. We like to do the same and will look to create many chances.

“We are all disappointed with the way we have been playing but we do have the players to get out of this position. On Saturday we will look to put things right and hopefully pick up three points.

“On a personal level it’s great to be back in the team. The injuries have been very frustrating. It will take a little while for me to get to full fitness but hopefully I will do that by playing games.”

Boss wants to make pal Appy unhappy

McInnes ready to lock horns with former team-mate.
Derek McInnes is looking forward to locking horns with a former team-mate in Blackpool boss Michael Appleton tomorrow (Saturday, 3pm).

City boss McInnes and former Manchester United trainee Appleton were midfield colleagues for West Brom during the promotion campaign in the early 2000s.

After a knee injury ended his playing career, Appleton began coaching with the Baggies, where he worked under Roberto Di Matteo and Roy Hodgson, as well as enjoying a brief spell as caretaker boss.

He later went on to manage Portsmouth in a cash-starved, administration-hit period, before being given the chance to move to Blackpool and succeed Ian Holloway’s reign ten days ago.

McInnes, meanwhile, made his name in management at St Johnstone, where he enjoyed promotion to the Scottish Premier League, and then helped City to survive a Championship relegation battle last term.

Now the two managers will lock horns for the first time at Ashton Gate, having seen their sides – Appleton’s Pompey – play out a tense goalless draw at Fratton Park last term.

“I’m pleased for Appy,” said McInnes of his old pal. “He’s now got the chance to fully concentrate on managing. There’s no doubt during his time at Portsmouth, with all their troubles, his focus was on fire-fighting.

“He handled that situation so well, keeping a composure about him. He’s been coaching for a long time, since his playing career ended, but his managerial time has been short.

“With the infrastructure in place at Blackpool and the quality he has available to him there, I’m sure he will go on to do well. I wish him well, but only after tomorrow's game!

“He likes his teams to play the West Brom way. Blackpool will always be dangerous, no matter what front three they decide to play.”

McInnes said earlier this week that he wanted his players to get over the “fear factor” of playing at Ashton Gate.

“If the game is going our way; great, but if the game’s not going our way then we have to keep a belief about ourselves,” added the manager.

“We’ve certainly seen an air of trepidation about the lads recently at home, similar to when we first arrived, and we need to get that out of our system.

“Come tomorrow, whether we get ourselves in front or go behind, there must be a belief in ourselves that we are good enough to win the game.”

Lewin Nyatanga and Louis Carey have been added to the growing injury list, which features Greg Cunningham, Jody Morris, Cole Skuse and Stephen McManus.

Neil Danns could make his debut.

Danns tuned in for City switch

New signing gives background to loan deal.
Neil Danns cut short a gig to sign for City, he exclusively revealed to Bristol City Player.

The 29-year-old has made an emergency loan switch to Ashton Gate for a month, and could be in line to make his debut against Blackpool in BS3 this Saturday.

Speaking for the first time since agreeing the move, Danns told the club’s TV service: “I was actually at a concert on Tuesday when I got the call, and I had to leave early to go and grab my boots and drive down to Bristol.

“It was a nice surprise and obviously I want to be playing football, so this move works for everyone involved.

“The main goal during the loan is to get some game time, but also to help the team. I’ll give my all while I am here.

“Once I found out I was coming here, I went on to the website to find out about the squad. With some of the quality on show, I’m surprised at the position the team is in but hopefully I can help do something about that.

“I’ve played with a number of the squad, like (Neil) Kilkenny and Dean (Gerken), and I know Jon Stead and Steven Davies really well.

“It’s nice to see a few friendly faces when you arrive at a new club and that should help me settle in.”

Danns has battled through a dogfight successfully before, albeit in different circumstances during his time with Crystal Palace.

“Our season was going really well but then we went into administration and lost ten points, which put us near the bottom,” he recalled.

“It turned into a bit of a dogfight so I’ve had the experience there – when we came through it – and perhaps I can use that during my time here to help this team.”

Danns, who has been given squad number 38, added: “I haven’t started a league game this season but I felt fine in training today and, if selected, I’ll be ready on Saturday.”

Adomah earns another cap

City winger's latest appearance for Ghana.
Albert Adomah collected his third Ghana cap in his country's 1-0 win over Cape Verde.

The Black Stars secured the international friendly win in Lisbon, Portugal, thanks to midfielder Mubarek Wakaso's 63rd minute piledriver.

City's Adomah operated on the left-wing during the game, playing for 75 minutes before being replaced by Afriyie Acquah.

He will now return to England to link up with his City team-mates before Saturday's home game with Blackpool.

Friday's Press Talk

Latest round-up of news from the media.
Bristol City boss Derek McInnes will decide today whether or not to offer Matthew Bates a short-term deal. A free agent after leaving Middlesbrough when his contract expired in the summer, the former England under-19 defender has been training with the Robins for more than a week.
The Post

Neil Danns breezed into Ashton Gate and urged his new Bristol City team-mates to "be brave" ahead of tomorrow's Championship showdown with Blackpool at Ashton Gate. Signed on a one-month loan from Leicester City, the midfielder is no stranger to battling relegation.
The Post

It can be argued that Bristol City's predicament is, in large part, attributable to the need to save pounds, shillings and pennies. Working on the axiom that a club's league position is generally determined by it's spending power in the transfer market, City owner Steve Lansdown and his board of directors ought to expect a return commensurate with the amount they are prepared to invest.
The Post

Bristol City boss Derek McInnes is well aware of the threat posed by Blackpool winger Thomas Ince ahead of the visit of the Seasiders to Ashton Gate. The 20-year-old has scored nine goals in just 14 Championship games this season and will be looking to find the back of the net for the fourth successive game against rock-bottom City who have now lost seven games on the spin.
Sky Sports

Joe Edwards could present Gary Johnson with an ideal Christmas present by extending his stay at Yeovil Town. The Bristol City loanee is currently in the middle of a loan spell at Huish Park that expires at the end of next month.
Western Gazette

Championship bottom club Bristol City have signed Leicester midfielder Neil Danns on a month’s loan.

I had no doubts he would score - McInnes

Manager on timely substitution.

Derek McInnes may have seen two points slip away at the death after City were denied a first victory in 11 games, but took several positives from a much-improved display.

Thomas Ince’s last-gasp penalty for visitors Blackpool cancelled out Steven Davies’ opener from the spot nine minutes from time at Ashton Gate.

The former Derby County striker was only introduced from the bench after Albert Adomah was brought down by keeper Matt Gilks, but duly gave City the lead with his first touch of the ball.

“We were thinking of making the sub anyway,” McInnes told Bristol City Player. “We’ve seen Albert looking really positive in going for the ball so I just said to Steven Davies ‘don’t put him off but if you really want it, go and grab it from him’, and I had no doubts he would score.”

Three long overdue points were imminent going into stoppage time, only for debutant Matthew Bates to be penalised for handling Nathan Delfouneso’s driven cross – incorrectly, in the eyes of the boss.

McInnes said: “I thought it was very harsh because there were about six or seven handball incidents that the referee never whistled for at all throughout the game, but I think it’s the linesman who’s given it.

“The frustrating thing is that having watched it on the video it still seems inconclusive to me, and we’re always told the referee has to be really sure before he gives it.

“We had the best chance of the game through Jon Stead one-on-one with the keeper, and once we got ourselves in front I felt we showed a lot of composure in trying to hold on to our lead. It wasn’t backs to the wall at any stage.

“There was a tenacity and a demand in each other, which was really apparent and the crowd got involved because of that – they appreciated the situation we’re in and got behind the players, so I need to thank them for that.”

The Scot was full of praise for Bates, whose signing was announced just one hour before kick-off, as well as left-back Joe Bryan, who did himself no harm in containing Ince for long periods of the contest.

McInnes added: “Tom Ince is as good a player as there is in the Championship and for young Joe to cope as admirably as he did takes a real level of concentration. I’ve told him to make sure he gets a DVD of the game, because that’s a reference for him now.

“Matthew Bates was great in a quiet and unassuming way. He brought a level of experience and authority to the back four.

“He’s clearly a class act with good pedigree – the only risk was the lack of games he’s had, but at times he strolled through the game and hopefully there’s far more to come from him.”
