Tottenham come into the match in 6th place on 27 points, while Liverpool are in 2nd place on 30 points. This will be the 165th time the two clubs have met. The first meeting came on Boxing Day in 1894 when Liverpool, who had been established just two years earlier after a dispute with Everton, played a friendly at Tottenham Marshes in a game won 3-0 by Spurs. A further visit from Liverpool was even less successful in Easter 1895 with Spurs winning 6-0. The first Football League meeting between the two clubs took place at White Hart Lane in November 1909 with Spurs winning 1-0 thanks to a Bert Middlemiss goal. He became the first Spurs player to score against both Merseyside clubs. The reverse fixture that season was won by Liverpool 2-0 at Anfield, which had previously been the home of Everton before their move to Goodison Park. All 139 League meetings played to date between Spurs & Liverpool have taken place in the Top Flight of English football. Tottenham's 2-1 First Division win at Anfield in March 1912 would be their last at the ground for 73 years with the jinx finally being broken by a Garth Crooks goal in 1-0 win in March 1985. The first FA Cup meeting came in the 5th Round in March 1968 and resulted in a 1-1 draw at the Lane. Liverpool won the replay 2-1. To date, the clubs have met 7 times in the competition with Tottenham's only win coming at Anfield in the 6th Round in March 1995 when goals from Teddy Sheringham and Jurgen Klinsmann earned a 2-1 victory. The teams first met in the Football League Cup in 1972 and have played 7 times in the competition with Spurs winning four games with two draws. Liverpool's only win came in the 1982 Final at Wembley which was won 3-1 after extra time. The teams contested the Charity Shield in August that year with League Champions Liverpool beating FA Cup Winners Spurs 1-0. Liverpool are one of three English clubs Spurs have played in European Competitions to date - the other being Manchester United and Wolverhampton Wanderers. Spurs beat Liverpool in the 1973 UEFA Cup Semi-Final 2-1 with a brace of goals from Martin Peters but a 1-0 win to Liverpool in the second leg at Anfield meant that the Reds progressed to the Final on the away goals rule. Two matches were played in Swaziland in June 1984 reulting in a 5-2 win for Liverpool and a 1-1 draw. In December 1985 and January 1986 the clubs met in the Screen Sport Super Cup - a competition played due to English club's being barred from European competition - with Liverpool winning both matches 2-0. Both Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur were founder-members of the Premier League in season 1992-93 and are two of the seven clubs who have been ever-present in the competition for the past 22 seasons (Arsenal, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Everton and Manchester United are the other five). The home fixture at White Hart Lane in November 2010 resulted in a 2-1 win for Spurs. Liverpool went ahead just before halftime with a goal from Martin Skrtel but Spurs came back in the second half with an own goal from Skrtel after 65 minutes and an injury-time winner from Aaron Lennon. The reverse fixture at Anfield in May 2011 proved to be the UEFA Europa League decider with Spurs winning 2-0 with goals from Rafael van der Vaart and a Luka Modric penalty. Oh look its this again. Will we see it twice every season? I dont like Tottenham Hotspur. I did once hear an American man say to his English girl friend, who was wearing a Spurs shirt: 'So why do they say they have hot spurs? It is a good question...
We need at least a point in this game. My heart is saying Tottenham 2:3 Liverpool but my head 2:2 Draw.
Spurs have got 9 points handed to them on a plate this season by shocking refereeing decisions so they should be down the bottom and that would be a true reflection of how **** all of their signings have been. I think we will get a draw but I wouldn't be surprised if we got robbed with the shady decisions they have been getting all season.
This is true. Wrong Penalty-Decision has been their top chance creator this season. Our main tactic in this game should be to keep the referee quiet. If Gerrard is out injured that is a lot harder. Maybe get Henderson to mark the man in black instead. As for the actual football; just pass to Suarez and it will be fine.
He's put a lot of effort in and this will be the match thread. I agree though we're enjoying the last match, this is a bit early. So I'm going to sticky and close until tomorrow at least if anyone really disagrees PM me.
Rumours that Gerrard will be out for 1 month are starting to gather pace. Firstly, how unlucky have we been with injuries so far this season? Sturridge started the season without a pre-season, then Suarez came back and Coutinho got injured.. Coutinho came back and then Sturridge and Enrique got injured, and now Gerrard. Anyway, it's probably the worst time to lose him but this also gives an opportunity to another player to step up and earn their place (Allen I'm looking at you), but with tricky away trips coming up (Spurs, City, Chelsea), what is the way forward in terms of setting up our midfield? Do we revert back to 3-5-2? Or take a risk and play Alberto? Out of our current midfield options which three would you start? And how would you set them up? Allen, Henderson, Lucas, Alberto, Coutinho. Looking at that doesn't fill me with confidence, but out of the options available I'd probably go.. -------Allen-----Lucas-------- Henderson----------Coutinho---- -------Suarez--Aspas----------- With limited ability in the middle I think we'll have to play it safe and put 4 in the middle, with Coutinho having more freedom than the others. With Henderson dropping deep without the ball and Coutinho coming inside. Definitely going to be a tough month now, but I have faith that Allen can prove people wrong and put in a few good performances.
Compared to past seasons we havnt had to bad a time with injuries. Or we have better depth and a better balanced team.
We've not had a massive quantity of injuries, its the quality those injuries are hitting. Also, Suarez being missing was a bit different and far from us being unlucky. In answer to your question about the line-up, I would change the system. Migs Johnson - Toure - Sakho - Flanagan Henderson - Lucas Sterling - Allen - Coutinho Suarez
If true, Well, for those of us saying Gerrard shouldn't necessarily start every match (didn't remotely want it under these circumstances mind you) the rest of the players now have a chance to put that case forward. Playing some of the best teams in the league during that time so it's up to them to prove why they should be in the first 11 in years to come (going on the idea that this lot will replace Gerrard when he retires). No point coming on in a nothing cup leg or against the relegation fodder. To be in a title competing LFC team of the future, these are the games to perform in. Realistically if they want to be anything other than a sub next year they have to show why. Otherwise it'll be a clear message to BR what he has to replace in January/July.
Sterling is still disappointing me, should have had 3 against the hammers, he's not quite ready yet but he does need game time. Saying that he was far better than moses, whom has lost form, another joe cole I think. Tbh I think we are a bit lucky to have Sturridge out as well as it means we will go 4-5-1 instead of 3-5-2 where we got completely dominated by Arsenal and that will give us a better chance(not saying he won't be missed!). Also in 4-5-1 we won't miss Gerrard as much as we will have more men in midfield. -migs- Johnson-skrtle-sakho-Kelly Ford-Allen-Henderson-alberto-sterling -Suarez-
I think Alberto deserves more of a chance than Welsh Xavi. Also I can see Aspas at least getting a few big sub appearances in the next few games
With Gerrard out, the midfield might be more mobile and have less chance of getting overrun, which happened when we played the big teams (and Everton ). However, passing range will be limited and someone will have to step up to add that bit of creativity from midfield. I fear we wont have the ability to unlock the defenses of City and Spurs and will see Couts and Suarez dropping too deep to get involved.
