    Flint departs for Teesside
    Wednesday, June 27th 2018

Aden Flint has completed a move to Middlesbrough for an undisclosed fee.

The 28-year-old defender has put pen to paper at the Riverside, bringing to an end his five-year stay at Ashton Gate.

City’s chief executive officer Mark Ashton told bcfc.co.uk: “There has been significant interest in Aden for a lengthy period and it’s the correct time in his career for him to move on.

“We thank him for everything he has done during his time at the club and we wish him well in the future.”

Lee Johnson commented: “On a personal level, it’s fantastic to have seen Aden mature and grow to become one of the best centre-halves in the division.

“I am naturally disappointed to see him leave but it’s important we move forward.

“I’m sure he will always receive a warm welcome at Ashton Gate and I look forward to seeing him when we face Middlesbrough next season.”

Since signing from Swindon Town in 2013, Flint has proved a popular figure amongst the City fanbase.

In 2014/15 he netted 15 goals en route to the League One title and Johnstone’s Paint Trophy double success, including a final day hat-trick against Walsall and a headed effort at Wembley against the same opponents.

Flint was named in the PFA League One Team of the Year and landed the club’s Player of the Year award in the same campaign, which he retained the following season.

The former Alfreton player continued to shine in the Sky Bet Championship and agreed a new deal until 2019, before being rewarded with another long-term contract at Ashton Gate in March.

Flint was in outstanding form for the club in the 2017/18 campaign, scoring nine goals in 46 appearances, helping City reach the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.

He landed the division’s Player of the Month award for September – the same month Lee Johnson secured the Manager of the Month accolade - as City enjoyed their best unbeaten run in the second tier since 1975 (August-October).

In total he made 246 appearances for the club, scoring 38 times.

Everyone at the club would like to thank Aden and wish him all the best for the future.

A pity but every player deserves a chance and the guy has done brilliant for us, all the best to Aden as far as I'm concerned.

Middlesbrough might have more of a chance of promotion than us, but it's not much of a step up - presumably he's also increased his salary significantly.

Maybe part of the terms of his last contract had clauses that allowed him to speak to clubs, possibly a non-promotion clause? Hopefully we'll get more details soon, because at this stage, you'll have plenty of unhappy City fans.

    Its a step up.

He is also going to a club with a Manager who knows what he is about. Mr Pulis is very clearly setting out his stage. Boro are going to be huge with goal scoring possibility at every set piece, with players with goals in them and teams will have real difficulty matching them physically.

Seven million pounds is pennies if Boro and Flint hit that potential.

I'm not denying it's a step up, I'm just saying with rumours of Brighton (already in the Premiership) and West Brom (possibly greater likelihood of promotion - according to odds anyway) being interested suitors, Middlesbrough is arguably not as big a step up as he may otherwise have achieved.

I think he has very very good chance of also playing in the Premiership. Aden Flint is clearly going to a promotion contender. Its a very good move for him with a Manager who really values his type. It may (will) be bullying football but Boro - Pulis - Flint makes a lot, no huge sense.

Agreed - he seems to be a very Pulis-like player.

Can’t see he’d chose Boro over a move to PL , Would suggest either PL teams not interested or wouldn’t meet our valuation .

As others have suggested Boro seem a good fit , both in terms of style of play and level , they will be there or there about next season and salary ide imagine would be a major upgrade .

Flint will be a hard act to follow and will always be part of our club, but I keep thinking back to last year when he looked certain to sign for Birmingham and only committed when Brums financial issues came to light. Maybe his heart has been elsewhere for a while.

Good luck to him - onwards........

Looked that way towards the end of the season , after his sending off actually. He didn’t look the same after that , I thought he must have been reprimanded, or al least spoken to , at the very least maybe felt he hadn’t been supported enough over the incident and subsequent red card.

In fairness from the beginning of the season until that point he looked as committed as ever.

Aden signing a new contract earlier in the year meant that we got a good fee for him

Good luck to the lad - I will certainly clap him on his return
