dunno if this has been done already but what do you lot make of him?

My mate is united crackers so i watch all your games with him and from the limited amount of pitch time hes had i must say i've never been convinced by him. we already have gutierez to beat people for fun then do nothing with it afterwards.

i know he's young and he's got a few tricks and plenty pace so theres time for him to improve but he seems to lack general football intelligence to me.

    what do you lot think?

I think the general consensus has been that he has talent, but he isn't mentally good enough for whatever reason. Maybe that will change when at Newcastle ( less pressure perhaps?) and if it does he will be a great signing for you, if it doesn't then you just wasted 3 million.

thing is if we sign him for 3m i couldn't see us losing too much on him even if he doesn't set the world alight. he'll probs still fetch £2m or so at the age of 25 to whoever we could palm him off too.

what do you mean metally anyway? just doesn't have the killer instinct or enough bottle for the fight or something?

Tricky and pretty fast when I saw him last year but seemed a bit frail. Apparently he has strengthened up over the summer and, with Fergie's guidance, could make more of an impact this year.

Technically gifted but he doesn't have the mentality to take that onto the big stage. Perhaps if he was loaned out to a lower club that may help.

in my opinion he isnt going to fulfill his potential, is a very skillful player with no end product, if we cant get it out of him no one can.

If you give us 3 million for him i'd be well happy

    Combination of things imo.

Firstly he doesn't seem to be very aware of what his team mates are doing. He'll go on a great run with pace and skill and trickery but will end up in a blind alley or delivering a ball that's pretty useless. That might be solved by getting some game time, but it seems to me like he just doesn't keep his head up and look around when playing.

Secondly he seems to be far too nervous whenever he's on the pitch. Plays like he's trying not to screw things up, which inevitably results in him being too stiff and some things getting screwed up. Again, that could come with game time, and also with moving to a less high profile club where the media spotlights aren't quite so bright.

Thirdly he seems to always need reassurance. Whenever he played for us he was often looking at SAF as if to say "did I do that right?", and whenever he made a mistake he struggled to throw it off. Dunno if that's another sign of not getting much game time, or some deeper lack of self confidence.

So yeah, he's far from the finished package, and I wouldn't expect consistency from him at first. Provided he can overcome these issues and get some confidence in himself and his teammates then he could do great for you, but I reckon you'll need to wait at least half a season before he starts showing what he can do.

I think I read somewhere that when he played in France he suffered from mental health problems which he may not be completely over. I may have imagined that though.

Totaly disgree, I think we should have kept him and yes I know he asked for the move but I still do think there alot more to come from him. His speed along is just shocking and again his was proven on the US tour.

At 3million, I think have gotten a steal as I think, playing for the toon is alot less pressurer an playing for us as he was normally drop in, played ok and then taken out again without any real run in the team due to the amount of great wingers we have already.

I think he'll do very, very well for Newcastle and the fact he usedto play for us and never really did anything majory wrong I wish the lad all the best.

Bad idea to come to NUFC then. Journalists are ****ing all over us at the moment about various things. I wish they'd bog off.

Yeah, if he wasn't mental already then he'll be stapling his head to the curtains in a matter of minutes up here.

I'm hoping it was more of a case of your club didn't suit him. He'll get more of a chance here so the more he plays his awareness can build and he can get an understanding with all of our lads. If we see the best of him I'll be more than happy. Cheers for the feedback too lads <ok>

I said this on the old 606 and I truly believe Obertan, along with Bebe were out of the door the moment they were caught on their phones on the bench at Old Trafford.

He is a decent player who would never have made it at United only for the amount of talent we have on the wings. He can still improve but I think he has good raw potential. Good signing for Newcastle, put him on the right wing and he'll get assists. Good finisher as well.

Will remember his great run and fantastic bit of skill to set Owen up for his 2nd goal at Wolfsburg a couple of years ago and his superb strike away to Bursaspor last year.

I watched the game against West Brom last season where WBA outplayed Utd think it was new years day, Obertan was subbed during the 2nd half and seemed a one trick pony. The WBA defender had him in his pocket all game and Obertan seemed to have no way of changing his game when marked tightly.

He just wasnt good enough for united, but in parts he looked like a great little player, I really do think he will do brilliant at newcastle, put it this way, he is going in my dream team now
