Any recommendations? as I'm fed up with the usual Cabernet Sauvignon's and Merlot's that my missus buys me nowadays instead of beer :p
prefer Red but I'll drink White or Rosé if needs must

Join a wine club like the Sunday Times Wine Club or Naked Wines even the basic mixed cases are all good wines. and if you look around you can get some good introductory offers as well.

Got fed up with Merlot so tried Valpolicella. Can be a bit pricey but Tesco's own label for £5.49 is better than Merlot. Most good Valpolicellas are around £12, but I've found a couple in Lidl for £6.99 and £8.99. They're both good, but the expensive one is fantastic.
I sometimes buy a couple of cases from "Tesco Wine by the Case" on-line. They do 50% off promotions every so often and the really good wines are worth getting. Join their Wine Club and they'll email you the promotions. It's free.

Dunno where you'd buy this in the UK but it's a great 'new wine' with an interesting taste ........ it's surprisingly good when you slightly chill it.

My current favourite is Burgo Viejo a really rich Rioja, I get it from the Naked Wines club but you might find it elsewhere. Another good standard is a Sicilian Nero D'Avola, Tescos have it on offer at £47 for a case of six bottles.

it seems to me that the best tasting (albeit not too expensive) wines (types I've tried and liked ) are kept for mainland Europe consumption ( wine always taste better in Germany or France) and we're (UK) are sent the bottom of the barrel stuff so to speak - unless we pay through the nose for quality

Try a Pinot Noir or a nice Malbec for a change, both smooth and easy to drink.

    Kannokop Paul sauers. Awesome.
Gaston hochar - Lebanese wine, different and excellent.
    A Barolo Italian wine, lovely

If you try a chianti you need a chianti Classico reserva.

Rioja is a great Spanish wine again I would recommend a reserva.

    Chilean Merlots are good.

New Zealand Pinot noir is good.

    Vergelegen - top wine.

cheers to everyone for the recommendations -I will endeavour to try out as many as I can - I'll just pass the list over to the missus and let her shop for them <cool> incidentally I purchased some cheap plonk recently from Tesco for my daughters 18th party called 'Straw Hat' - my advice is to give it a miss if you see it it's rank !
