Of course it is only 9pm here :)

It was more than Ohio obviously he won just about every swing state, CO, NV, VA, FL OH, IA. He will finish at around 330 electoral votes. It wasnt a close election really. Most people knew this would happen. All sides of the US media have an inherent interest in a close election as it drives ratings and income from advertisers. Which is why they ignore the obvious. The popular vote was pretty close but that means nothing in our system.

Yea I voted this morning when I woke up. I am 31 so this was my 4th election. None of them have really been much of a surprise to be honest. The trick is to ignore the maps that the main media stations show. Not to get to mathematical but the reason they are wrong is that they show a state as being tied if the lead in that state is less than the margin of error. This is an incorrect assumption. Below is part of an email I sent to a friend having this same discussion months ago. For the next election use this site instead it is a much more accurate site than the main ones. http://electoral-vote.com/

    "Hey man,

So I did the math on the odds that a 3% difference could actually mean a tie if there was a 3% margin of error. The odds that it is a tie is 0.17% or the odds that the poll is predicting the right winner is 99.83%.

Lets say it is showing a 3% difference in a 4% margin of error.

The odds that it is a tie is 0.14%.
The odds that the poll is wrong and the other person is wining is 14.08%.
The odds that the poll is correct is 85.78%.

Any % gain predicted will have a greater than 50% likely hood of being correct. So the only situation in which someone could say a state was tied is when it is exactly 50 - 50. If you are basing it on math that is the only situation a tie can exist since the margin of error effects only the % over 50% that you are certain but it shouldn't effect your prediction."

I would have voted for Obama if I was still living in Virginia. I just moved to California about 4 months ago. Since California is such a liberal state and I knew that Romney had no chance of wining it I voted for the Green Party which is a much more liberal party in the US.

Obama is now over 300 electoral college votes. His 'mandate' from the popular vote is not yet secured though, as the counting goes on, and it's very close indeed.

why do American leaders keep on telling Americans , the US is the greatest nation on Earth ? is it down to an inferiority complex ?? It must be !!

Also another thing is how divided the "Union " really is its almost as if its still 1865 !!
In the UK we are by and large underwhelmed and cynical of our politicians , we dont believe what they tell us nor do we expect them to serve us .
In the US there seems to be more of a hysterical frenzy to whoop and boo at every Politicians sound bite .

The US way seems very much like the Performances we frown upon in Russia , China , Burma , Korea , etc etc .

Democracy is Democracy to those with the power

The Yanks would have to be the most ignorant nation on the face of the Earth. They also believe that they are the still the most powerful country in the world. They should look to the East and take note of what is happening in China......The most powerful country in the world

Agreed, some people don't even know who the Prime Minister is.

I voted in my first election, but probably won't again. I doubt my vote makes a difference anyway.

My mate voted for an independent party before the coalition, but what's the point in that, you're just throwing it away. Labour & the Tories will never be beaten here. And if Scotland goes independent we'll be stuck with the Tories, as Labour;s heartland is in Scotland.

Politics here has a pretty poor turnout- but you can't blame the public when some of the MPs and Cabinet Memebers don't give a flying f*&k about their constituants ie that women whose just gone into I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here, despite being an MP at Westminster.

That's the thing - your vote is so insignificant that people don't care. For some reason 80% of the population just vote one party religiously for their whole life because they were taught to or whatever and it all comes down to these areas and demographics rather than what the parties will actually do.

A mate sent me this in an email, last night, before the results were known:

A message to the Red States

    Dear Red States:

We're ticked off at your Neanderthal attitudes and politics and we've
decided we're leaving: "Legitimate rape." is almost reason enough!

We in California intend to form our own country and we're taking the
    other Blue States with us.

In case you aren't aware that includes New York, Hawaii, Oregon,
Washington, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois and the rest of
    the Northeast.

We believe this split will be beneficial to the nation and especially
to the people of the new country of The Enlightened States of America
    (E.S.A).

    To sum up briefly:

You get Texas , Oklahoma and all the slave states.

We get stem cell research and the best beaches.

We get Andrew Cuomo and Elizabeth Warren. You get Bobby Jindal and Todd Akin.

We get the Statue of Liberty. You get OpryLand.

We get Intel and Microsoft. You get WorldCom.

We get Harvard. You get Ole' Miss.

We get 85 percent of America 's venture capital and entrepreneurs.

    You get Alabama .

We get two-thirds of the tax revenue. You get to make the red states
    pay their fair share.

Since our aggregate divorce rate is 22 percent lower than the
Christian Coalition's we get a bunch of happy families. You get a
    bunch of single moms.

Please be aware that the E.S.A. will be pro choice and anti war and
we're going to want all our citizens back from Afghanistan at once. If
you need people to fight, ask your evangelicals. They have kids
they're apparently willing to send to their deaths for no purpose and
they don't care if you don't show pictures of their children's caskets
    coming home.

We wish you success in Afghanistan , and possibly Iran as well, but
we're not willing to spend our resources in these sorts of pursuits.

With the Blue States in hand we will have firm control of 80% of the
country's fresh water, more than 90% of the pineapple and lettuce, 92%
of the nation's fresh fruit, 95% of America's quality wines (you can
serve French wines at state dinners) 90% of all cheese, 90 percent of
the high tech industry, most of the US low sulfur coal, all living
redwoods, sequoias and condors, all the Ivy and Seven Sister schools
plus Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Cal Tech, Long Beach State, CAL, San
    Jose State and MIT.

With the Red States you will have to cope with 88% of all obese
Americans and their projected health care costs, 92% of all US
mosquitoes, nearly 100% of the tornadoes, 90% of the hurricanes, 99%
of all Southern Baptists, virtually 100% of all televangelists, Rush
Limbaugh, Bob Jones University, Clemson and the University of Georgia.

We get Hollywood and Yosemite , thank you.

38% of those in the Red states believe Jonah was actually swallowed by
a whale, 62% believe life is sacred unless we're discussing the death
penalty or gun laws, 44% say that evolution is only a theory, 53% that
Saddam was involved in 9/11 and 61% of you crazy bastards believe you
are people with higher morals then we lefties.

We're taking the good weed too. You can have that crap they grow in Mexico .

    Sincerely,
Citizens of the Enlightened States of America

Watched it 'till about half one, so got all the boring bits. A convincing win for Obama and I think the Republican party could become history now. The minorities are becoming a majority. It's unusual because parties usually struggle to stay in power for too long, which would suggest the Republicans would be likely to win the next election. However, I can't see it, I can't see them ever winning another election. It might take them disbanding and coming back as a new party.

the future of the world is in the hands of the BRIC group. These will be the most powerful economies going forward (Brazil-Russia-India-China).

LOL. I see that at least 2 of the blue states have voted to legalise marijuana in these elections (Washington, Colorado) and possibly some others as well that I didn't spot.

They've still got a fair bit of catching up to do, China's economy is still only half the size of the USA and the other three aren't even as big as the UK.
