Just discovered this morning that Hugh Porter, the commentator, has effectively been sacked by the BBC after nearly 30 years of commentary.

I was disappointed to miss out on tickets to cycling during the Olympics but watching it on TV with his exciting commentary wasn't a bad second!

the bbc seem to be weaving the knife at the moment (also eg Colin Murray)
that's sad as he is excellent, listened to him at olympics over the years and world championships etc.
for me though, the voice of cycling is Phil Liggett (shame the BBC never got into the Tour De France coverage)

Yet they retain k*obends like Garth Crooks and Steve 'king Claridge <doh>
Not to mention the MOTD biased crew.
As it's literally 'our' station, paid for by us with no opt-out option, as in pay-per-view or scrambled signal if you choose not to pay, they should hold a referendum before swinging the axe like this <grr>

Sorry if you find this offensive but the heading at the top of my screen says ' English Football The Premier League Norwich City ' - how the hell is this related to that. If you want to talk about the presenter of a minority sport that few of us are interested in then perhaps you should raise it on the cycling forum which also exists on not606.

Perhaps the same could be said for all off topic posts on here? Hence why I put O/T in the title. Go and say that on all threads with O/T on them, which I see you haven't done.

i think O/T in the title gives it away 1950, i think that is fine

Midway, the thread title tells you what the subject matter is, if it's not for you just ignore it!

We are primarily a football forum, dedicated to fans of NCFC, but we talk about other clubs, and just like the real world, we talk about other subjects, I don't have any problem with that, why do you?

OT stands for Off Topic, it's clearly in header of this topic if it "offends" you for it to be here then don't click on topics with OT in the title, of which there are many, not to mention the OT posts within a given thread.

I sympathise to an extent, you are correct, but given the toing and froing and banter sometimes it's nice to have an OT thread and discuss that

Think I'm going to start a new thread titled 'O/T I don't like bananas.' :D Anyone got a problem with that except for those who do like bananas?

We also have 'special' dispensation for threads about music, film/dvd and travel. Plus, imo, it's nice to know that we do have interests over and above NCFC.

I also doubt 1950 would have any problem with a thread about David Beckham for example. It's not Norwich related so according to him it shouldn't be on this board, or does he just pick and choose - which it appears he has done looking at other 'O/T' threads.

I wonder why 1950 is highlighting cycling in particular.

Does the 'Lithe Young Lady In Lycra' no longer pass by his pub?

Now Spring is upon us, I'm sure she'll be back. <ok>

Sad news indeed, he has been there, and done it, great commentator, should not matter a jot how young or old you are, but how good you are, his commentaries at the olympics were brilliant, think Phil Liggitt is second to none, but perhaps Eurosport might take him on.

The amount of time my male friends have spent oggling at Laura Trott during the Olympics and since is unbelievable!

I can kinda see the arguments from both sides here, this forum was originally set up to discuss football matters but like has been said we all have other interests that we like to talk about so as long as it doesn't get out of hand and we end up with a situation where there are less articles about NCFC and more about OT threads then I personally don't have a problem either.

I personally couldn't give two hoots about cycling, but agree that it is sad that there are becoming less and less good sports pundits/commentators on the BBC and more absolute bell ends who don't offer any insightful analysis at all.

Sorry for any offence - I'm even more grumpy than usual at the moment. After the complete shambles of the Luton debacle I went to Australia to see family arriving back in time to see the Everton game which, apart from the last 5 mins, didn't greatly inspire me. Whilst still trying to adjust to cloud and cold rather than hot and sunny I picked up a dose of the green apple foxtrot and spent most of last week studying the back of a toilet door!! In fairness I thought that ' off topic ' meant ' off topic but nowhere else to raise the point ' - in this case there is a cycling forum. Apologies if I was wrong. Regret to say Gandy that the vision of loveliness hasn't passed our way for a while - sadly missed.

Sorry, half this post isn't related to football, or Norwich, so I'm going to have to ask a mod to delete it. :steam:

Anyway, think I've made my point.

I think Hugh Porter is iconic in terms of cycling for me and to replace him with a football commentator, who probably knows very little about cycling is a mistake. I only hope that a positive comes out of this in that he has to stop commentating on football!

This thread will be far more relevant if it turns out that Hugh Porter is a Norwich fan... <whistle>
