Despite the exchange rate £1000 wouldn't get you **** anywhere. 100K definately, although England is one of the best places to live in the world when you think about it. No dangerous animals, very rarely any natural disasters, the only problem with this country is the people, not all, obviously, however with that said every country has the same type of people, some good & some bad.

Knife crime, and social crimes are getting way out of hand in the UK, Guns are getting worse...

When i have kids I dont want to bring them up in this Country, I want to give them the best chance possible in life, and better my own

The Great in Britain has long gone

The "Great" in Great Britain can never go, because it relates to the geographic extent not some qualitative description of the nation.

Never fancied Australia, I have family over there, but never visited. My brother went and was disapointed, thought the Aussies were a bit too self assured.

Is it actually the country that entices people down under, or is it the idea of a "better quality of life"?

I have visited my family in Canada a number of times. If I was going to emigrate anywhere, that's the only country I'd go to. Great place, great seasons, great people.

Id say for me personally the quality of life would be a big factor, then secondly the better weather and outdoor living with the Family, not stuck infront of a box watching reruns of old shows, or crap quality new shows...

Id rather be out biking or swimming or walking with the Family after work, and having BBQ after it :)

I must sound like im moaning, but at the end of the day only I can change the World I live in..Just need to find what skills shortages there is out there, to make it easier to find a sponsor etc

Sick of hearing about gang violence/culture on this small Island, its a boiling pot and its bubbling over..

I wouldnt go, I know this country has its problems and I agree with the poster above when he says the main problem with this country is the people. I still believe that while this country is far from perfect that it is still one of the greatest countries to live, in the world. My family all live here and I wouldnt give them up for the world, even though at least one of them manage to piss me off most days.

Why do people think that Australia is any different when it comes to violence etc? You will find the same **** in every place in the world, if you walk down the wrong street in Hull is the equivalent of walking down the wrong street in Sydney, New York, Paris, Berlin, Moscow.
The only good thing that the Aussies are good at is telling PC people to **** off if they don't like it there. That's what I like.

I have lived here for 4 1/2 years now. I think it can be quite hard at first to settle when you first get here. I would also say that as with everywhere you go there are good points and bad points, and the same with people.

Jobs wise i get far more here than i ever did in the UK, but on the flip side i do think it is quite expensive living here, but probably offset by higher wages. The good thing at the moment is the fact that with the exchange rate being so in favour of the AU$ it appears that you are getting so much more, because you naturally compare against what you got in the UK at todays exchange rate. When the boots on the other foot it obviously doesnt look quite so appealing. IMO Jobs are also to a large degree, got by who you know and not as much what you know here. Once in certain industries you can move around quite well between companies.

Fair points Bribane, isn't the Australian ‘neighbours’ utopia a myth?

Do you not think there is any knife and gun crime there? There’s an established gang culture in Sydney and a surprisingly high non-European ethnic population, half the cities are SE Asian. It’s got obvious positives like the weather and outdoor sports but many negatives like its isolation, terrible TV, social and sartorial backwardness and the cities are very expensive to settle in and buy property if your doing more than just a backpacking adventure. I know a few people who've tried it and come back to the UK.

The grass is not always greener and England is not as **** as some people like to think.

Consider this, most young Australians can’t wait to leave and do a year touring America or Europe because they’ve been brought up in such isolation down there!

I have been here for 25 years now,my wife is Aussie and my 4 girls are.I came here by myself ,hardest thing i ever hado to do.I am a psych nurse so opportunity came for psych nurses in Victoria. My attitude was that if i did not do it why complain years later i wish i had tried Australia.
Missed my family and also mates etc, lived in London for a while was in City Supporters Southern Branch.
Was it worthwhile, yes i think so_One of my daughters lived in UK for a while dual citizenship etc.
When i was back in ASugust good to catch up with mates and my sister but we have all moved on.
i try to keep in touch with people, true friends remain despite the distance.
I do miss seeing City and was jealous when we got into the Premiership, but that did not last for long,ie the jealously.
So i am happy, have a good family and still plenty of riends in the UK.That is why forums like this are a lifeblood.Rant over Go City

I think Melbourne Tigers reply is very true, and i can identify with his statement of being the hardest thing he ever did. I wouldn't really say life is better, just different in some ways. There are certainly things i do miss about the UK (Hull City being very high on the list). As for spending more time with the family, i would say about the same as i always made it a priority when my kids were growing up to be there for them.

I think it does feel fairly safe here, but there are certainly knife and gun crimes here, but i also didn't feel it was unsafe back in Hull. One of the big things we did leave for, was i wasn't sure what sort of future the kids would have had and hopefully i have made the right decision but only looking back in history will i know that.

Electricians, Welders, Boilermakers, Diesel Mechanics, Plumbers, are all positions down here where you can expect to find employment easily. Any Tradie emmigrating to Oz wouldn't find it too hard to find work. Especially in the State of South Australia, and Western Australia with the mining going on in these states. Most immigrants tend to settle on the Eastern Seaboard for some reason. I wouldn't leave this state for quids. Nine to ten months of the year good barbecue weather with our winter being close to your summer

Wherever you live in the world it should make no difference as to how much time you spend with the family IMO.

I agree with Chazz, you can do biking, swimming, walking etc after work here. You don't need weather of 40 degrees to get outside. BBQ's are different however, but at least we dont have red backs, huntsmen, poisonous snakes etc trying to kill you as you add another shrimp to the barbie.

I think the countryside in Britain is unrivalled in the world - there is no better place to go biking, walking etc

New Zealand South Island is stunning, very much a rival to the UK countryside...
