Anyone out there do a bit of this?

I like a blast of it, I have to say, and I've seen the benefits.

I used to be a bit like...

...but pretty much into it now.

    Anyone go particularly long distances?

Just to confirm, I've since established the 'J' is NOT silent, it is pronounced.

    Thanks.

I sometimes jog from the front door to the car when I'm in a hurry.

I do, did my third half marathon on Sunday and wanting to step up to a full marathon soon. I find it strangely addictive!

What sort of distances / training are you doing? Happy to pass on any tips etc!

I was watching a programme on BBC2 the other night and they were saying a good form of exercise is just going full pelt on an exercise bike for a minute a day and that's all some people need, and that actual jogging and vigorous exercise will have little effect on a lot of people. I can't run due to being too much overweight and asthmatic so hope my exercise bike can take the daily minute punishement it's going to get for a minute every day, will report back on this unless doing it kills me.

I used to do about 5 miles every night and was down to about 25 minutes at my peak. I've not done so much since I moved up here, mainly because I hate any kind of serious gradient (up or down) which we have all round here, and I can't use a treadmill. My uncle does ultra distance events (those ridiculous things they do through Death Valley that are multiple marathons put together) and reckoned based on training runs I joined him on that I'd have been able to do good half marathon times.

I should really get back into it because I've put on about 4 stone since I moved, it's only about 1-2 more than I should have let myself gain because I'm still only 14 stone and I'm 6'3".

I try to run every week now, 10k-12k average, and it's trimmed a lot of flab off. That's what's spurred me on to keep going.

Longest I've run is 12 miles in one go. I enjoy it, and the benefits for me have been huge, but I do suffer from a lot of aches & pains afterwards. The old feet and knees!

Bugger me, if you could do 5 miles in 25 mins then you would have done a serious time at a half marathon - that's very impressive. I know someone that does those ultramarathons and they're completely off the scale - I couldn't even comprehend how people manage that.

I did the Leeds Half-Marathon, Great north Run, Humber Bridge Half Marathon and Beverley 10k races myself when I was in half-decent shape and they were bad enough, these ultra-marathons sound obscene but I guess if you are in that good shape then it's just like normal training for them. Eddie Izzard did all those marathons the other year so I guess a lot of it is pyschological, and you can overcome your actual physical state.

I like to do a bit myself. I've done 2 Great North Runs, 5 Great Manchester Runs, 2Walkington 10k's and the Beverley 10k once. I'm also doing the Great Manchester Run again this year and possibly the Great North. I've set myself time targets and not hit them yet, so will keep going until I do.

I've also done The Mighty Deerstalker 4 times, which is an adventure up 2 mountains (1 of which is a scree slope), through 2 rivers, 2 bogs, and with obtstacle courses thrown in for good measure. And it's at night to make it a little more interesting.

Looking to join a running club round my way as I'm not getting any quicker and maybe running with others will help?

It's Saturday 17 March this year. It's in Innerleithen in the Scottish borders. I was supposed to be doing it but have had to pull out. I don't know whether the organisers would allow you to take my place? If they will and you're interested let me know and I'll let you have my details for transferring. I've also got a twin room in a bnb booked (£30pppn) so you can have that as well.

ps it's a right laugh, but tough - they say it's 10k, but someone had gps last year and it's 10 miles

Cheers for the offer - bit short notice for me I'm afraid and being based all the way down in london I won't be able to make it. Will definitely look out for this one next year though. I'm considering doing Tough Mudder which seems to be an urban (and therefore less fun) version of this.

Ok no probs. They normally open entries for the next year not long after the event so have a look on the website in a couple of weeks.

There's also the Hell Runner series. They do a Hell up North and Hell down South, which isn't as much fun as the Deerstalker but the one up north was a run through forests and bogs etc. Think that one is 10 miles as well (but in daylight)

I can't even play a round of golf without aching like a bastard these days.
Reading this has inspired me, I'm sticking my walking boots on and I'm off for a power walk up Swanland Hill.

Long gone are the days of 18 milers in full kit.

I've got a mate up in Hull who is seriously into ultra marathons. He does training runs like finishing work on a Friday evening, and then running the Yorkshire Wolds to Filey (70-odd miles) where his girlfriend is waiting to pick him up, have some lunch and drive back. He's running about 100k around Mont Blanc again this autumn. Sounds insane to me. He seems to run close to 100 miles a week.
