    Yes, he was eccentric, to the point where he openly flirted with the British National Party and supported the views of Enoch Powell. He was against the Race Relations Act, he believed women's place was in the home, and he was homophobic.

    Well the sky at night got me into astronomy and from that got me a trip to south africa for £300 to see the largest telescope in the southern hemisphere and teach in the townships of capetown so very grateful to the man.... however sometimes he was hard to understand

    I don't know how many eccentrics there are left but he must be the close to the last. Anyone who plays the xylophone when there are all those other wonderful instruments to play has to be eccentric.
    I wasn't a fan of his politics but they way things are at the moment some of the things he said years ago which didn't make sense then, make sense now. I guess he was harmless and its certainly the end of an era.
