Just realised my points have gone up by about 250,000 and my rep power by 2,500. Can anyone tell me what this means/why it's happened? :D

I don't understand the system at all.

Well, I understand how it works, but I don't see how people with <200 posts seem to have huge rep in comparison to some who've been around since the website was created.

I mean, seriously, look at my green dots/points/power. 2 years & 4 months, 3000+ posts. Nack all.

It doesn't bother me but I am curious as to why. I'm pretty sure people don't press like/dislike that often.

Some people join threads where each gives the other points so they all end up with lots of points.

It seems more popular on other boards than it does on this one.

Yeah mine did the same quite randomly after I had only been on a few weeks, does not seem to affect anything just odd. Don't think I kissed any arse, just read threads.

It's not like and dislike. Rep is separate. Click control panel at the top right and you'll see your rep.

The geordies are a laugh about this on their board. They must have had a little bicker with another board and made a "Rep Brothel" (Which is also on the Leeds Forum now) just to take the piss after they've apparently been called "Rep Whores".

Want some Rep, go and post in one of them and you'll soon shoot up <ok>

Something is a bit wonky though - according to my profile I was just give a quarter of a million points about 10 minutes ago.

Don't think I was doing anything but reading then.

Yeah but people can rep your posts any time. Once you've posted it its out there forever and can be repped any time.

Ah. Well. My point remains. I wouldn't have though people would click it that much.

It doesn't need to be a lot of people, it could be one click.

Your rep power as I'm writing this is 204, where as PLT's is 12,017. If you rep a post it makes a difference of 204 points to a person (using your profile again you're currently on about 30,000) and increases their rep power by 2 (actually by 2.04 but it doesn't show the decimals until they've built up enough to round up), where as PLT gives them 12,017 points and increases their rep power by 120.

Taking Bernstein's example where he got 250,000ish points 10 minutes before the post, that'll just be one person with a massive rep power off another forum giving him rep. The reason they do that is because as a group they're trying to build their points/rep powers up as high as possible by agreeing that they'll all just rep all of each other's posts, but the site needs you to "spread it around" amongst so many people before you can rep the same person again. They therefore just pick random posts to rep.

Is there a prize for all this nonsense or is it just a big pile of ****?

I can't see what my rop rating is and honestly don't think I could give less of a toss.

    It's for ****s.

Mine went up for a little bit, which I was quite ashamed of.

I'm back down now, thankfully. I'd hate to be respected by the majority of posters on here.

I think it would probably be a good idea to bin all this rep bollocks completely.

    The second.
    I agree

I have made the point to brb and those above that at the moment we the ability to rep posts, like/dislike posts, and rate threads all in completely different systems which is complete overkill. Personally I'd do away with the lot, but even if we're going to have something I really can't see any reason to have more than 1 of them active. Rep and star rating is really in your face when people abuse them, so I'd take it down to just the like and dislike buttons.

There's a new upgrade being worked on by the people who design the forum, and apparently we're going to have more options we can set for ourselves. I'm hoping all this bollocks will be something we can opt in or out of on a forum by forum basis so that we can turn off everything we don't use on here. That way at least we can't have the board cluttered up by the crap bits of the site being abused.
